    "couldn't open port"

    ...i get the message "couldn't open port" every time i shut down my PackardBell 486DX...i recently upgraded to Windows 95 with a new modem, more RAM, etc....i have to delete and re-install the modem to make it work...then i shut the computer dowm and start-up again with the same results...any solutions???

    what com port is your new modem set for? Try: uninstall or remove the modem in windows, disable com2 in the cmos(I would remove com2 from device manager first too)and then reboot & reinstall modem drivers.
    Also a lot of these new PNP modems make their own icon in control panel, where you can change the com port and there is an uninstall, make sure you pick a com port thats not already in use, a lot of times they want to pick com5, which a lot of programs don't recognize. I generally try to stick with com2 or 4.
