    hp mbr problem

a friend of mine had problems with his hp pavillion computer giving mbr errors, so i suggested using the fdisk utility to rewrite the mbr and format reinstall from his hp restore disk. however this seems to have been amistake since now the restore disk gives an error saying it will only install on an hp computer and it doesnt recognize his as an hp computer anymore. when he called hp tech support on the issue they said hed have to take it to a specialist shop and have it "re-tattood" aparently hp 's come with some sort of custom mbr. does anyone know of a workaround for this problem, short of hauling it off to another shop? any help would be most appreciated

    Which Pavilion model is it?

Just for grins, you might see if you can boot from that Restore CD...they should have FDISK and Format, etc. utilities available. Is that what you did? Also, which version of Windows are you concerned with?
