Actually Trip you're right. I started in 1998 with Win95. Soon after we switched to Win98. I did have a little experience with Win3.1 but I didn't get very far with it.

Prior to this the only experience I've had with pre- 'plug and pray' was trying to install a 33.6 modem and finding out that I had the wrong IRQ addresses so that when I got online I had to use the TAB key because my mouse froze.

Anyway, I'm going to ditch this project for this Friday evening and go out and have some real fun.

Not to say Computers aren't fun too, but I'm going to pick it up again tomorrow and let you know what my next problem becomes.

    Thanks for all you help,

    Talking

    "pre- 'plug and pray' "

    YES!!!

Because that is what it was.
Geez, I still have a headache from it.
    It never did go away.
Sometimes that is the best thing you can do.
I remember back then I would go to bed with a problem and wake up with an answer.
    Talk about dreams!!!
But now it is: Plug and Hey.
    We HAVE come far.
Truth be told, timing is important.
I would want any new tech to know DOS and IRQ's, etc.
It truly helps knowing the basics: what is underneath all the pretty pictures (icons +).
Still, knowing me, I could not go to bed tonight without plugging that darn thing in, so I would know the next step.
    Just a thought.

    Twitch indeed.
But hey, that hardware is modern by comparison.
    You want twitching and legacy?
    Let's talk 486 with Dos 5 and Windows 3.0.
Add 2400 baud modem with ISA controller card.
    Then take the quantum leap:
throw in one of those loooong sound cards with multiple cdrom connections and a proprietary 1x CD drive.
Now make all this work with DOS drivers.
    Let the twitching begin.

    Now are we having fun?

I kinda twisted my way through the old stuff, didn't really get into playing with hardware till the end of 286's

But I was happily configuring NE1000 cards at nearly £1000 each for use with mau's... aaah novell and dos, nothing simpler

The phone coupler was for use with prestel and my bbc b

    Hi Garak,

Take two aspirin and call me in the morning, or better yet, just help me answer a question.

I got into the old system today. I'm going to swap out and old 486 motherboard using Windows 3.1 and add this new PCCHIPs motherboard.

The problem is that this PCCHIPS mobo doesn't have a printer port. It has ISA and PCI slots instead. The old 486 motherboard has a ISA printer card. I can take out the old ISA printer card and put it in one of the PCCHIPS ISA slots but I can't get the damned thing out!!

I'm worried if I pull too hard I may break something. Both the video card and the mouse card came out of the old mobo fine, but this printer card is something else.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Geez Orange...

    ...why don't you listen?:
    Remember:

    "Better yet...
...instead of all this, stick a video card in it with ram, connect a power supply and see if it boots up.
If it does the bios string will be at the bottom of the post screen.
Let us know, huh. All this guessing is draining"

Why are you worried about a printer port?
Let's start the D*** thing up first and see if it works...
    ...alright?
    Lets worry about peripherals later.

You're right Trip, we should cut to the meat of the problem.

Anyway, the reason the printer is an issue to me is because I am doing this project for someone who has need of a printer. It will be an issue eventually.

    Anway, will boot up tomorrow,

The "new" PCChips board does have a printer connection. It is right next to the floppy connection Orange. Go back and look at the schematic. Leave that old parallel port/printer card in the old mb and don't even worry about it.
