Problems restarting in XP Pro
I recently upgraded my computer to a Celeron 2ghz, and also upgraded Windows Me to XP Pro (I did a clean install though). XP has ben great, except that my computer somtimes doesn't restart properly. I tell Windows XP to restart, the restart sequence finishes, but then instead of my machine rebooting - I get nothing, but the power is still on. The reset button on my case then doesn't work. I have to use the power button to turn off the system, then power it back on - this is becoming VERY frustrating!
A friend of mind reccommend going into the BIOS and setting the PNP OS option, I've done this but nothing worked
Any help would be VERY appreciated!

What did you set the pnp option from and to?
Nothing works now?
Have you checked the reset switch is actually connected to the motherboard in the right place?

Sorry, perhaps I need to word my posts better.
I meant that nothing I have tried to fix this problem has worked, although I can still use the computer. I checked the motherboard manual, the reset switch is plugged into the correct socket, yes. I tired just using the reset switch in Windows, when I had just logged on, the reset switch works then.
I turned the PnP OS function 'ON', as my friend explained Windows 2000 and XP use this thing called ACPI and should have it enabled, unlike older versions like Windows Me.

OK, lets see if windows actually noticed what you did in bios...
right click my computer, 3rd tab hardware, middle button, device manager click on the + next to Computer, what does it say on the expanded branch?
If ACPI is working you should see, ACPI Uniprocessor PC.

ACPI Uniprocessor PC is what appears under that computer tab in the system hardware manager.

have a look through here I suggest you try the power down issues first. While this is not exactly powerdown, it may well be related.

Problems restarting in XP Home Edition
Moobar/NooNoo,
Have you ever solved this problem?
I have the same problem.
When I do an XP RESTART my DELL Dimension 4400 shutsdown gracefully but the power stays on and it NEVER restarts, I have to push the power button to power off and push the power button again to go back on.
I've tried to RESTART from SAFE MODE (minimal drivers loaded) and the same thing happens. I've upgraded my BIOS in hopes that it would cure the problem. NOT... Tried various different power management settings. NOT...
Very frustrating.
Is there something on the motherboard I need to check/jumper?
Anyone?
Any help would be appreciated.

You can do one of 3 things
1. Check it's not a driver problem - does it say "it is now safe to switch off" ? If it doesn't, then a driver is hanging the shutdown... how do you find the driver? disable each pci or onboard device one at a time until it shuts down right.
2. If it's not 1 update the bios - risky, may not fix unless it specifically states its an acpi or apm update
And/OR
3. carry out step 5 here
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

NooNoo - Thanks for the reply, I've been away for awhile, so I could not reply back until now.
This stuff will drive you nuts I just got done fixing a problem on my father-inlaws old Compaq Presario Windows 98SE machine. (you gotta keep the inlaws happy...)
Before I posted in this forum I did try a RESTART after entering SAFE MODE which I guess would qualify me as completeing STEP 5.
I've checked the documentation for my motherboard at
ftp://download.intel.com/support/mot...t/a7585201.pdf
and could not find anything that would help (setting, jumper...).
I've updated my BIOS to from A02 to the current A06 to see if this resolved the problem. (NOT)
I'm stumped.
I'm going to try your suggestion "Check it's not a driver problem - does it say "it is now safe to switch off" ? If it doesn't, then a driver is hanging the shutdown... how do you find the driver? disable each pci or onboard device one at a time until it shuts down right. " hopefully this weekend. Again thanks for the reply.
I've posted a portion of my EVEREST config info below if anyone spots anything please let me know and I'll buy you a beer...
Thanks
Rick...

So does it say "It is now safe to turn off you computer?"
Page 105 of the manual - is plug and play os set to yes or no?

No, It does NOT say "It is now safe to turn off you computer" when I do the press RESTART button (icon). It seems to shutdown normally but does NOT restart, it just sits there with the power ON and I have to hold the power button down for about 4-5 seconds and it shuts off then I have to press the power button to start it backup again.
I HAVE tried setting the "PLUG and PLAY" in the BIOS to NO with no luck.
Yesterday I ;
1. I download all the latest drivers and installed for the NVIDIA and SoundBlaster cards.
2. Used the "WINDOWS ADVANCED OPTION MENU" to boot and restart from;
a. SAFE MODE
b. ENABLE BOOT LOGGING (checked log for any unusual messages)
c. Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
None of these worked. Same symptoms.
3. Used the MSCONFIG utility to boot using the "DIAGNOSTIC STARTUP - load basic devices and services ony" option
4. Used DEVICE MANAGER to DISABLE the floppy disk, DVD-CD burner, CD burner,
second HD, sound card, serial and parallel ports, usb ports and anything else that
I could think of that would not make my system crash on boot.
I think I tried what seems to have been about 50 restarts yesterday with the same
pathetic results (use the power buton, hold and RESTART). Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.
I've got a 512MB RAM chip coming in the mail I hope today and I'm gonna swap out the RAM. (I needed to up it anyway).
While I'm in the box I'm going to disconnect some hardware to see if that might be the culprit.
This has become my mission in life now.
I should note that this problem was apparent to me awhile ago but I did not take much action because it didn't really bother me to use the power button on RESTART/software installs, the machine was booting down ok which is the important part. When I first got the DELL machine it did do the RESTART as normal but I can't pinpoint when this problem started. Now with a cable connection I want to be able to cycle the machine remotely.
Maybe the power supply is a problem? It's still the original from DELL.
As ususual any suggestions would be appreciated because I'm slowly running out of them.
Thanks for listening
Rick..

Unlikely to be the power supply.
Your descriptions says that windows is unable to shut down because a driver ( and remember there are virtual drivers, not all are actual hardware drivers) is not letting it shut down. Virtual cd drives, packet writing programs, corrupt antivirus, firewall... any of those can have the same effect - the "driver" won't quit and therefore can't.
I have a 98 box which has a wireless cheeeeeeppp nic, with a driver that won't let it shut down .... two choices, change the hardware or put up with it.... guess which I chose!
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
