Post Can I scroll from a three button mouse?

I have been looking at Logitech's trackballs and I've noticed that the ones that do not have an actual physical wheel on the unit advertise some kind of scrolling functionality. My cheapo CompUSA mouse* has a side button along with two top buttons and I wondered if this mouse has the same potential to be used for scrolling in some way. I have always wondered what the third button is for on many of the older mice. Is it for scrolling? I would imagine that the button would work by holding it down and moving the mouse up and down to scroll. The drivers that came with the unit did not seem to offer any kind of extra functionality.

Can anyone describe how the Logitech trackballs work and whether I might be able to use my current mouse to scroll from the mouse? (not from the screen)

*Here are some numbers from underneath the mouse,

    Model: NWW-9
    SKU: 131739
    Item: EP20162W
    S/N: 981104421

    I should add,

I am running Windows 98, still using DirectX 7 something, I have a Saitek X35 HOTAS joystick setup to my serial port. All at 433Mhz on a celeron.
