opinion needed-server role
Right now, this new 2003 server will just used as a file server. However, eventually, it will be used as a database server. Should I add AD now?

I wouldn't. If it's a database server you probably need all the speed you can get from it. On the other hand, if you have less than 2 servers with AD and there is no plan of adding another one soon you might want to consider AD as a backup for your current DC.

opinion..
Right now, we just have one dc. On this new server (the file server), have a backup drive in which I'll be doing backups to the DC also. You think it'd be ok to do even if the file server is not part of the AD (I have the file server to connect to the DC as a domain)
