SMS vs What
What are some alternatives to MS SMS?
Never underestimate the power, or aggrevation, of stupid users in mass numbers..

IBM's Tivoli (http://www-306.ibm.com/software/tivoli/) and HP's OpenView (http://www.openview.hp.com/about/index.html) come to mind. But those may be overkill what what you need.

Even belarc has a solution available for that.

Don't know yet, but MOM and SMS can both function together - MOM being "added into" the SMS architecture.

We use a product called Altiris - its ok if your network is good.

For simply auditing workstations, to **** with paying for some half baked solution, use AIDA32 !!
My company has purchased Altiris, but yikes, it is taking us forever and 3 days to implement!
