Question ASUS 440BX Flagship Mother Board ?

    Hi,

I am upgrading a friends computer with a couple of upgrades that I am doing with her computer, when I put in the one upgrade the Video card that seems to be working Ok, the other upgrade is a hard drive upgrade, its a 80GB hard drive, & I have changed the jumper settings about a million times, the monitor keeps coming up with a error that says this Disk Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and Press Enter, theres no viruses on this computer I checked it with the F_Prot prog, & above that message I get a BIOS update data incorrect error with code CPUID=00000683, Please provide me feedback on how to fix these error as to I do not know what is wrong with her PC.

Here PC is a ASUS 440BX Flagship Mother Board

    Thank you,

    Welcome to Windrivers MRGTechnologies

One assumes you have updated the bios for this board? There are 3 in the flagship range of cubx.... so you would need to be more specific about which one.

Have you fdisked and formatted the drive and put the system files on?

A hard drive can only boot when it has been made bootable. The simplest way to do it would be to use a 98 bootdisk, fdisk into say 3 partitions, format the first partition using the system files switch
    Format c: /s

It looks like the BIOS version needs to be at least 1004 to support drives over 32GB size. I also note the BIOS uses Phoenix bit-shift translation, so it would be best to have the latest possible BIOS to avoid the bit-shift bug that appeared in some early versions of this translation algorithm and caused drive corruption.

Edit: Forget that last bit, it only applied if you were trying to get away with using a BIOS that could only see 32G of a larger drive.

so the 80 gig is setup as a slave drive and the old one stays the primary OS drive? Also if you take out the upgrade does it work like it used to?

So even removing the stuff you added doesn't help eh? Hmm... I would attempt the BIOS update as others have suggested, it may help fix the problem.

I thought cubx was a via chipset and the 440bx was the p2b-f and the p3b-f boards?

Both of wich won't support above 32 gig drives. That probably means we are dealing with overlay software.

I have even tryed hooking the Hard Drive up to one of my old Dell Optiplex Gs's computers & it says

    Hard Disk controller 0 failure.

    No boot device avaliable -
Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility.

    Thank you,

if you are sure you have hooked up the drive correctly, sounds like its a gonna.

Do you hear it spin up?

if it won't work with the original drive in place...I wouldn't jump right to a bios update. Have you reset CMOS? Get it working without the new drive in place again first. Is the new drive in the correct spot on ribbon cable? End is for the master (boot) drive center one for slave drive.

arch0nmyc0n, I will try that 1st, when I am at her house on Friday, I really wish I had her PC here right now.

asm481, No, I have not tryed that, thats taken out the battery correct?
Yes, Its in the right place, I-----I------I
    MB S1 M1

*MB - is for the master boot peice.
*S1 - is for the slave hard drive
*M1 - is for the master hard drive

    Is my diagram correct?

    Happy New Year.
