you need to install your sound and video card drivers....
did you get a driver disk with the system or a motherboard disk? if so the drivers should be on that.
If not you will have to identify your sound and video cards and maybe download new xp drivers for it if you haven't got them there.
Is this a compaq/hp/gateway/emachine?? or is it a custom built system?
If you would like help to identify or download your drivers please post as much information on them as possible...like model and make of computer if its a hp/compaq/gateway or if it is a custom built system you will need motherboard identification if the sound is onboard.
To Identify motherboard go to
http://www.belarc.com ........and download their personal advisor. It should tell you what system/computer/motherboard you are dealing with ...

Can give me/us the exact compaq pesario model ? ... much easier than trying to google reference drivers for each bit ... onboard bits often aren't 'exactly identified' so links from the manufacturers site are 'best'

[sigh] ... that's the series ... Lookee how many hits it gives ! (see if you can fathom which model you have).
You can try all Mayets links if you like .. & see if she's been inspired to 'guess' correctly, trouble is as I said with 'onboards' is the 'bits' are tough to identify exactly & thus get 'bang on' the right drivers, they may very well work, I just can't be certain for you ....
If you ain't happy with that, try giving as much info on your box, then maybe someone here can figure just which model & be sure (Given that we don't know for sure, try the suggested ones first etc etc )

sndvol32.exe should live in the windows\system folder.
Next thing to do is check in there and see if there is any file call sndvol32 - make sure you have set in my computer, tools, folder options, view, the ability to see hidden files and protected sysem files, also make sure you have unchecked hide extensions for known file types.
If it is not there, get your xp disk and go start, run and type in SFC /scannow and click ok. That should put it back.
Do you have service pack 1 and all updates installed for xp pro?
