    Parts Parts Parts...

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement logic board for my hard drive?

I just learned one of those "Hard Lessons".

Lesson 1: Cheap power supplies SUCK.

My primary system was running just fine and then all of a sudden it powered
down. The system would not turn on. After unpluging the power connector
from the hard drive the system powered up but would not post. So I installed
a spare PS and my video display was filled with trash characters and would not
boot. After replacing the video card it finally completed post and attempted to
    boot.

After testing the video card and hard drive in alt computers I verified that they
were in fact damaged. Other computers will not even turn on while a power
connector is plugged into the hard drive.

Lesson 2: You need to back up more than once every two years.

A lot of code can be written in two years. And a lot can be lost in two seconds.

Dammit, I know better than to not back up. At work I am always the a-hole
that yells at people for not backing up but I neglect that duty myself.

I lost an eighty gig Seagate drive and an ATI Radeon 9500 Pro. The new
good quality power supply I bought as a replacement was less than thirty bucks.
That is what I get for being cheap.

So, with that out of the way...

Does anyone know where I can get a new logic board for a Seagate ST380021A?

    Firmware 3.51

Does Seagate sell parts to "end users"?

    Thanks.

Hmm, well if you were in Australia, I would have said here:

But it's quite likely that any drive from that series, down to the 20G ST320011A could use the same board, firmware is often loaded from the platter these days. Maybe you could get a used drive to borrow the board from, and hope the spin motor coils haven't burned out.

Ruslan would probably be the most likely to know for sure.

Thanks for the reply. Their fees are reasonable compared to some of the larger data recovery services.

I purchased a drive of the same model "ST380021A" as the bad drive. The board looks slightly different but the connection points are in the exact same place. That board unfortunately did not function correctly with my bad drive. The drive did spin up though.

Mabey I should just buy a few from Ebay and hope I get the correct pcb.
That's the worst looking hat I ever saw. You buy a hat like that I bet you get a free bowl of soup. It looks good on you though.

best off looking at the batch model / number also. Also, is the drive retail or OEM?

Just I have found that swapping parts with OEM / Retail drives causes a "clunk, clunk... stammer... clunck clunck.." effect. Maybe firmware issues - who can say :-s
