    Apple Mac

Yes I know it's WINdrivers but what the hell. There's somemighty fine Mac people out there so answer this one if you can! It's got me completely confused. I'll just give the necessary...

2 macs, both running version 9.2.2
    1 new printer, very expensive
1 mac prints to it very fast
other mac prints but only after thinking about it for 50 seconds, no matter what application you print from
both macs nic cards set to 100mb full duplex, printer nic card set to auto
connect each mac directly to printer via crossover and 1 still pauses for 50 seconds
connected slow mac directly to printer and set printer speed to 10mbps half duplex and no pause now
left printer at 10mbps half duplex and both macs on network and all seems to be OK

Boss not happy. He insists printer set to auto and pausing mac fixed to print at high speed. However, I cannot for the life of me find out why this 1 mac pauses for 50 seconds or so before printing, apart from guessing that it's some kind of handshaking thing going on between nics. The two macs are identical otherwise.

Last thing, swapped nics, fault stayed with the mac.

    Any suggestions welcomed!!

You've tested the printers from different workstations, right?

I thought it may have been related to a workstation printer setting (to buffer the entire job before printing any of it), but that wouldn't be it if the problem occurs using either of the Macs.

Do the printers use the same firmware versions?

Do they have the same amount of memory?

You might want to ask the same question here. They have a lot more esperience with Mac products.

Why do they call them Apple Macs? They don't taste like apples.

Ok so let's move from hardware to software. What os and version of said os are you running? Are you patched up? Also are they the same models? Sounds to me like the nic in the slow one might be acting up.

He said it's 9.2.2 and has swapped the NICs and the fault stayed.

Do both macs have background printing turned on/off ?
Have you tried deleting the printer prefs on the slow mac?
If you have Norton disk doctor run it on the slow one if you haven't already and reinstall the driver.
You may also want to check the memory settings for the macs to see how much virtual memory is set..

Background printing greyed out on both macs.
    Yes, no difference.
    Good idea.
    Checked, identical.
