    USB mass storage device

    Hi All,

    I am running windows xp

I am having problems running connecting my mp3 player / mass storage device. I recently bought another mp3 player and when I connected it to the USB it detected it correctly and started installing the drivers but then a message on the task bar informed me that the driver installation was not successful and that the mp3 player may not work.

At first I thought it was conflicting with my previous USB mp3 player which still works fine. I unintalled all mass storage deivce drivers (through the device manager) and then tried reinstalling the second mp3 player. Same error. I inserted the original working mp3 player and that installed correctly.

I restarted the machine and booted up in windows safe mode. I inserted the new mp3 player and this time it has installed correctly and functions correctly. The new mp3 player also works fine on a work computer with win98 installed (also has the original mp3 player working on it) and another work XP machine.

I have no idea why its not working with my XP booting in normal mode. I have drives on C, D, and E with no networked drives so it should be fine connecting to F. I have tried disconnecting all other USB devices and booting up windows but still the same problem. I have checked the driver details in safe mode with new mp3 player and it is using the same mass storage device drivers as the original working mp3 player in normal boot up.

Anyone know what the difference could be between loading XP in safe mode and loading in normal mode ? ? ?

    Any help is gratefully received.

    Deon

Welcome to windrivers deon. Would you mind telling us the make and model of the mp3 player and what type of memory it uses?

Are your motherboard drivers loaded correctly? Are the windows updates done?

Yes I have sp1 installed and all other xp updates. Motherboard drivers have all been loaded. If it was a conflict with my mobo I would have expected it not to work in safe mode as well.

try this post of mine too. http://forums.windrivers.com/showthr...802#post507802 ..... i had an issue with windows taking over the letter with a network drive, which i believe (is this correct?) that network drives would be disabled in safe mode, allowing the drive to be visible...

Unhappy USB 3.5" HDD External Case storage auto-disconnect

Folks, I just bought a unit to house a new Maxtor 40GB harddisk. Both the Win2000 SP2(IBM T30), and a Gigabyte running W98 (driver program was provided in the package for W98) can recognise when I plug it into the USB (both front/MOBO) but within a minute or so, it would disconnect. I tried with a formatted harddisk, it still the same.

In the W98, a USB2 Epson printer was recently installed & it worked perfectly. So, it wouldn't be a USB2 issue. In Win2000 unit, only a USB2 mouse is connected & working.

    I need help!

Welcome to windrivers chanyboy. This may or may not relate to your disconnect issue, but W2K does not support USB2 w/ SP2. You need to install SP4. BTW, mice and printers are not USB2 devices.

We need more info to provide additional assistance. Please provide the make/model of the computers and/or motherboards, as well as the make/model of the enclosure.

    specs 1 < part 2> revised.

...<edited to trim mail length, but I can repost the 2nd part for troubleshooting purpose. Thanks for the help, whoever>....

Lately, I uploaded SP4 to Win2000 and retry the USB2.0 connection. This time the hDD has been formatted and data is copied into it before retrying. It connected and hold for a longer period, yet it's still the same.

    On the Computer Info:

    MS Windows 2000, 5.00.2195, SP4
    Mobile Intel Pentium 4 - 1.8GHz

In the other machines with Win98, it has not being resolved (the MOBO is a VIA chipset on AMD Athlon 1.8GHz, the driver shows up but the same happened - connect and disconnect after a short while).
