    Motherboard Upgrade steps?

    Hi.. New to these boards... Looks like some very helpful people here..

    Anyway.. right to my point:

    Today, as soon as fedex gets here, I will be upgrading my PC's mainboard, CPU, and memory.

    My current system is running with the Asus P3V4X MD w/ 667mhz P III CPU.

    I purchased the ASUS P4SX-X w/ P4 2.8Ghz and 512 mb DDR RAM.

    My question is, how should I go about this upgrade without rebuilding my OS(WinXP Pro)? Starting from Scratch is not an option..

    I have alot of perriferals (sp) like Printers, Scanner, MP3 Devices, TV Card, etc.. Should I remove these all within XP before I upgrade the Motherboard?
    Or, will XP find them all and sort out the issues?

    I haven't used XP much yet so I can't give any real specific advice but I do believe if you upgrade the mainboard and CPU you will probably have to re-register your copy of XP with Microsoft.

    I wouldn't worry about removing the device drivers though you could leave any external peripherals (printer, scanner, MP3 player) disconnected until the new motherboard and all its resources are recognized.

    If rebuilding the OS is not an option you should consider making backups of whatever is not replaceable first (don't forget to test your backups before you proceed). If rebuilding is not an option because you don't have your original WinXP Pro install CD, you might want some advice on how best to proceed with that specific problem. Like I said, I haven't delved into XP much yet but I'm pretty sure you're going to have issues with re-registering the OS if you replace the motherboard and CPU.

    Thanks for the reply Cisco2.. If you'd believe it, my normal nick for Message Boards is Cisco1... But it was taken on this board...

    Anyway, I didn;t even thing about the registration issues.. I think I may give it a try, I can always fall back to the Old MB/CPU ..

    I'll let you know what happens..

    I am in the IT field but the nick has nothing to do with the router company. I've been using it in various places (originally for playing Quake and Quake II) for years, just something I pulled out of thin air one day and it's stuck with me.

    Follow these instructions to the letter... I've used it several times and it works like a charm when swapping out motherboards and other hardware. Pay close attention to #'s 1,2 & 3. As a matter of course I keep a copy of Mergeide.reg on my USB drive.

    1. Copy the following information into Notepad, and then save the file on a 3.5-inch disk. Name the file Mergeide.reg, without the .txt file name extension.

    2. Extract the Atapi.sys, Intelide.sys, Pciide.sys, and Pciidex.sys files from the %SystemRoot%\Driver Cache\I386\Driver.cab file, or copy the files to the %SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers folder.

    3. In Windows Explorer, right-click the Mergeide.reg file in the floppy drive, and then click Merge. Windows displays the following message:

    Are you sure you want to add the information in A:\Mergeide.reg to the registry?

    Click Yes.

    After the import process is completed, Windows displays another message:

    Information from A:\Mergeide.reg was successfully entered into the registry.

    Many Thanks... That is extremly helpful...

    It looks like the main cause for those stop errors is the IDE Chipsets.

    I assume, if the new MB uses the same Chipset, I wont see the stop..

    regardless.. I will make the Disk and follow the directions as stated... Thanks again!

    just an FYI.. The P4S8X uses a Promise IDE Chipset and the P3V4x uses a VIA Chip set.

    So.. It wont be as easy as I thought.. Cool!

    2. Extract the Atapi.sys, Intelide.sys, Pciide.sys, and Pciidex.sys files from the %SystemRoot%\Driver Cache\I386\Driver.cab file, or copy the files to the %SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers folder.

    3. In Windows Explorer, right-click the Mergeide.reg file in the floppy drive, and then click Merge. Windows displays the following message:

    Are you sure you want to add the information in A:\Mergeide.reg to the registry?

    Click Yes.

    After the import process is completed, Windows displays another message:

    Information from A:\Mergeide.reg was successfully entered into the registry.

    you will probably get a blue screen, boot from cd rom and repair, usually works
