Most modems would work. I would recommend a 56k modem. If you are wondering compatiblity, then post the statistics about his computer (OS, Memory, Harddrive, Processor Speed, etc.)

Yeah, just about any will work as long as the computer was made in the last 4 years or so. You'll probably want a "PCI" modem, 56k, v90 standard, etc. 90% of the modems out there are going to have these stats.

If you have good phone line quality you can get a cheap one. If phone line quality is an issue you might want a more expensive name brand (US Robotics).

The fastest connection I've ever had was on a generic $20 modem at my old apartment (near the phone company).

Oh yeah... If the computer is a Hewlett-Packard, Compaq, Pacard Bell, etc. there's a chance that the company combined the sound in with the modem. If that's the case, you'll want a PCI sound card as well.
If you have a mass-produced computer and it isn;t intigrated in with the sound (or motherboard) then it might have wires that connect to the sound card or motherboard which your new modem does no have. Don't worry about those wires too much. I get people who call about them all the time. they aren't necessary.

What features do you want? How much money do you want to spend?

If you want to go high-end, buy a good external modem like a Diamond Supra or a USR. I seem to remember seeing a Reboot post warning about Diamond's USB models, though; you might want to do a search and check the post out.

If you want to go low-end, you could do worse than Acer/AOpen's FM56-ITU/2, a full hardware ISA card. The one's I have installed, provide consistent and stable connect speeds in the high 40's with good through-put. Acer/AOpen's driver support has been OK, as well.

If you can afford it, don't buy a Winmodem. Some of the more expensive ones work reasonably well, but the cheaper ones can be a real nightmare to configure.

I did mention the Diamond USB, only because I have one, and it's great for most casual stuff (no more room for ISA, PCI, or Serial). It's got the Lucent Venus chipset (hard modem), and works just fine, BUT, it doesn't always seem to initialize when windows starts, and requires an unplug/replug to get it going.
