    Welcome to Windrivers Vercenta
From what you said my immediate reaction is -
Take it back if its new, its faulty most likely.

Test it in another machine, to make sure.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

If it is under warranty, you might want to return it to save yourself the aggravation, as NooNoo suggested. However, you did say that your were able to burn a DVD, so the unit is working.

Which software are you using to copy? And which program to play DVD's?

I use PowerDVD, and in its interface, there is a button that will let you select the Source, or location, of your DVD. Fiddle around with your player if it has the same option, and set it up to read from your DVD-Burner.

What type of DVD burner is it? I had an HP DVD burner and it was broke out of the box. Returned it and ran like a champ.
