    Question hang up

    I have a ASUS K7M motherboard
    192 megs of ram
Sound Blaster Live Gamer Sound Card
    CD 52X and Hp CD_RW
    Voodoo 3 2000 AGP Driver date 7-1-2000
    Athlon Thunderbird 900
    AMI bios 2-29-2000
External Zoom modem and internal PCI modem
(not using the internal modem at this time. Problem started before adding modem)
Recently upgraded to the Thunderbird from an
Athlon 500. The Coolmaster fan that I got would not fit properly and I believed the CPU was not seated properly. Changed the fan tonight with on that allowed the CPU to seat properly, but the computer hangs up after a period of time, varies. Running NASCAR, it hangs very quickly. Other wise it last longer. Updated the Thunderbird and problem of hanging up did not start for about a week. I am running base Windows 98. Hitting Clt. Alt. and Delete will not work. I have to hit the reset button to start over. Ran scan disk (norton) and defraged the HD. Yesterday the computer was sitting idle and started to continually beep. Only a restart stopped the beeping. It has done this twice in the last two days.

Sounds like you have a hardware problem, most likely dealing with the temperature on your chip. I run a Thunderbird 800 with an asus A7V board, and have dealt with similar issues. Check your chip temperature and motherboard temperature in the bios after you have to hit reset, rather quickly, to get a reading on it, and see what temp it is running at. Should be less than 120 degrees F, although the chip will run, or can run, at 135 and below. A new cooling fan may be what you need, also, some silicon gel between the heatsink and chip may help out as well (to better disperse the heat through the heatsink), which you can pick up at just about any computer store.

You may also check your video card out as well, Voodoo 2's and 3's have a tendancy to overheat, even with the built in heatsink attached to them, make sure (You probably are, but double check anywayz) that you are running the proper video drivers, as a different driver set on those cards will put more of a heat strain on that particular card.

    Hope this helps.

    Question

Recently upgraded from an Athlon 500 to Thunderbird 900 on an ASUS K7M
motherboard with 192 megs or ram. Upgraded the BIOS prior to installing
the Thunderbird. Depending on the application, the computer begings to
lock up. Checked temp, its ok. Running a dual fan on the cpu. Switched
back to the Athlon 500 and have no problems. Running Windows 98, 1st
edition. Thinking of installing 98 SE. No other changes have been made
to the computer. Using a Voodoo 3-2000 AGP card, and a Sound Blaster
Live Gamer card. The modem is external. The AMD-751 AGP Host to PCI
Bridge and AMD-751 PCI to PCI Bridge drivers are dated 2-2-2000. The
