1394 drive disappears from XP
I have an Adaptec Firewire card in an XP Pro machine and use it to connect ot a Western Digital HD and to a Canon camcorder. The two are plugged into different ports of the Adaptec card. Problem is that sometimes - not always - when turning off or unplugging the camcorder, the hard drive disappears (and gets a yellow ! in Device Manager). Disconnect and reconnect either the HD power or HD Firewire brings it back, so an annoying workaround does exist. Everything is powered through good UPS. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I already disabled the XP Firewire "network", an Adaptec suggestion, which was making the HD disappear at random times. Now it only happens as mentioined above. Thanks!

Edadave,
Have you tried using the "safely remove hardware" procedure to stop the device before unplugging it?
There is, or should be, an icon on your taskbar, which, when clicked, launches a dialogue box which lets you stop any external devices prior to unplugging them.
XP can be very picky with some devices if the correct procedure is not followed!

Now where did I leave my Lump Hammer?

Thanks John, but camcorders don't have this for some reason. But you've given me an idea. I'll play with disabling the camera in Device Manager before diconnecting it. I'm hoping this will narrow down the issue.

Woo-hoo! Found a Microsoft patch that fixed the problem:
It's a long URL - need to cut and paste to assemble:

edadave, your link doesn't quite work... can you give the knowledge base number for it?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

Sorry about that - I edited the previous post with a clear if long URL.
Microsoft knowledge base number is Q329256. Microsoft seems to have broken links between the KB page and download page.
