    Question usb2.0 and firewire combo on laptop

    okay. i got a usb mass storage device for my laptop and it is plugged into my usb1.1. it works fine...but i wanted a 2.0 speed. so i bought a combo card with 2 usb2.0 ports and one firewire port. i also have an ipod. so...when i plug my mass storage device into the usb2.0 port, or my ipod into the firewire port....it recognized them on my "safely remove harddrive" thingy...but it doesn't do anything. like, the ipod won't update on itunes, the z: drive of my storage device won't open..but it still recognizes everything. so i gave up on fixing it and put my old firewire card back into the driver...and i plugged my ipod in, and it won't work either! its the same thing, it recognized it, but it still won't do anything.
    i think this is a computer problem...maybe i accidently deactivated something. can anyone help me please!!!! i need music and stuff, i am about to kill myself. thank you.

    ps. i have a gateway pc with windows xp.

    Have you installed sp1? You need sp1 in xp for usb 2.0 to work. In device manager, what do you show under usb controllers and 1394 controllers? Any ? or !

    alright...i have:
    OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
    ---> 1394 Net Adapter #2
    Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
    ----> USB Root Hub
    ALi PCI to USB Open Host Controller
    ---->USB Root Hub

    and there are 3 of the last group...

    oh and i also have the service pack 1, or at least that's what it says under systems.

    Is this with the combo card or the old firewire card? In either case, it looks like the usb controller is not being properly identified or doesn't have the correct driver. We need to know which gateway you have, plus the makes and models of the two cards.

    I'm not sure what you mean by 3 of the last group, but it doesn't sound good.

    okay...umm this is with the combo card...when its with the old card, it doesn't have as many options, but it still doesn't recognize stuff.

    i have an intel pentium III processor, 851 MHz and 192 MB of RAM, i don't know if this is what you need? the model is SOLO 5300.

    the old firewire is called 3 port 1394, from startech.com
    and the new combo card is DH-UFC2+2 Combo cardbus.

    i hope this helps! thanks again

    Did you install xp as an upgrade or was it a clean install? I would try booting into safe mode and deleting all the usb devices, then rebooting and letting windows redetect them.

    the xp was an upgrade. i did what you said, and it said it installed all the hardware and stuff. but when i tried to plug my usb mass storage device in the port, it detected it, but under properties (for the storage device) it says : "this device cannot work properly" or something.... so i don't know how to fix that, i haven't yet checked if my ipod works...but i'm assuming it won't because the storage device doesn't

    After it reinstalled the hardware, did the identification change? Instead of the Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller you should have something like Intel 82371 AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller. If not, dowload aida32 and post the report for physical devices.

    Have you installed the driver for the combo card? It is available here.

    ps...i installed the drivers that you gave me, and then i reinstalled my usb storage device...and now it recognizes it without saying "device will not open (code 10)" ...but it still won't open my Z:\ drive (which is the mass storage) or any of my files inside of the device.

    Well, at least its recognizing the intel controller now.

    After you installed the driver, did the reference to Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller change to something resembling ALi USB 2.0 Host Controller? If not, try removing that device in device manager and then letting windows search for new devices. If that doesn't work, try installing the ALi drivers.

    Does the usb storage device work if you connect it to the usb port on the laptop instead of the combo card?

    Smile cured!

    hudsonsmith...i owe you my life!
    thank you so much, that ALi driver cured everything! i just got done updating my ipod, and it was so much faster with the storage device in the 2.0 instead of 1.1.

    you surely are a knight in shining armor.
    until next time,
    take care,
