Scanned for viruses or trojans? Deleting .tmp files would be my first suggestion but you've done that.

Have you tried alternate methods of running explorer? Right click start and select Explore. Try start->run->explorer.exe etc?

    Tried Norton Windoctor?
If it's true that wherever you go, there you are: how come so many people look lost?

Have you removed the harddrive and scanned for viruses using another pc? That could make the difference.

replace explorer.exe from the 2k cd.
check system and win.ini for load, run and shell=
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
