HDD failure after Disk Manager 2000 no detect recognize
Hi folks,
sitting here yet 4 days to install a IBM IC35L080 80GB HDD on a Compaq Despro PIII, 500Mhz Windows98se as a slave. The HDD was running on a PI, Windows95 as secondary master.
The PI System couldn't recognize the 80Gigs, so i used Disk Manager 2000 to fix this Problem.
Now that i try to install this HDD on the PIII, it does not show up in the bios anymore, no matter how i switch the jumpers of the HDD or the position as primary ,secondary, master or slave. Instead i get the compaq error code "1782 - Harddisk Controller Failure"
The HDD sounds as if it wants to start spinning, but does not have enough power.
When i try another HDD on both controllers it is recognized.
When i try the 80GB HDD on a PI System the HDD is recognized.
Can n e 1 please give me advice?
Thanx in advance

Welcome to windrivers, fellow. With the drive installed on the win95 system, download and run the drive fitness test. Also, check the compaq website to ensure you have the most recent rompaq for your deskpro, as well as any relevant patches. If you have difficulty locating it, post the specific model # for your deskpro. It may be necessary to remove or at the least reinstall disk manager.
Probability factor of one to one...we have normality, I repeat we have normality. Anything you still can't cope with is therefore your own problem.

Uninstall the diskmanager using the p1 would be my call too.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

i'm afraid ur right, u ensured me in my assumption to remove disk manager, i secretly hoped for another solution cause i need to buy another HDD to secure a least 40GB data using the PI-System.
didn't mention that:
the 80GB HDD has 3 partitions
i tried fdisk/mbr without effect

Well that was always the best advice (Noo gave it so it ought to be )
Overlay software to get around bios limitations on size recognition is just plain stupid (generally), especially when a pci controller card can be had for $20 or less - which is far less than any legal overlay s/w might actually be

I have come across a simillar problem with some of those "funny" compaq systems where you need to use the "CS" or "Cable Select" posititons on all drives on the same IDE cable. If not the system will stubbornly NOT recognise the drive, even if the drives are set master and slave.
