No sound in Windows Media Player - but sound Elsewhere?!

    I am running a Dell Deminsion 8100 with Pentium 4 (1.4 Ghz)and 256 ram.
I have a Creative SoundBlaster sound card (version 5.0) and I am using Windows ME operating system

I have not loaded anything new or changed settings recently, but just the other day I was playing an mp3 from Windows Media Player and it would not load, giving me an error 0xC00D11BA: Cannot play the file saying that "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly." I have tried to play and all sorts of audio and nothing works in WMP, but it DOES work if I play it in other programs (like Musicmatch Jukebox)

WMP will load up Video files just fine - But with NO Sound at all...
(my quicktime files play fine with sound in Quicktime....)

Then I tried to double check my Drivers and settings in the "Sounds and Multimedia" of Control Panel... only to find that IT WILL NOT OPEN! I have tried everthing and it will not open.

Again... I have sound via Everywhere Except for within Windows Media Player. (sounds work on websites, at start up, and on every other media or audio player...)

FYI, I HAVE deleted and re-downloaded the latest WMP program and have run Windows update and have all my latest Critical updates.

I do have Norton Anti-Virus loaded and running - and have scanned several times for viruses or worms and nothing is showing.

    ANY IDEAS WHAT TO DO???

    Mr Cornett
    Your attitude is very poor
I would remove the sound card in safe mode and then reinstall it
Creative is known for this type of thing
    Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3
    AMD FX 8350 4ghz OCTO-Core
    Windows 8.1 PRO 64
    Adata 256 gig SSD
    Kingston HyperX 1600 16 Gigs
    Sapphire R9 280 2gig
    Enermax Liberty Modular 620

Agreed, jcornett badgered me in pm until I was forced to tell him why I was unable to personally reply to his requests... strangely he did not answer that one.

edit aaah I see he did.

Apparently he does not like being less important to me than my family.

Jcornett, this is FREE help. If you do not understand the basics of your computer you can hardly shout at us for not helping you. I am glad you have solved your problems elsewhere, but please remember, the help you have received so far here would have cost you money at a tech shop, who probably would have just formatted and reinstalled.

Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

    ahhhh

So HELP is in Short supply

    but RIDICULE is plentiful here....

(and LIES as well - saying that a Badgered you,
when all I did was ASK and YOU snapped at me
several times before making up something about
    your family.)

    PLUS you are all WRONG!

I was not related to my Soundcard at all (if you read my problem you would know that my sound card worked Fine on every singlething Except for WindowsMedia Player....)

It was a WINDOWS related problem that was solved by simply installing an XP pro upgrade.
    -----------------------------

    You all are IDIOTS!

but like you said, it is FREE advice

(I guess it is True,,,, you get what you pay for it!)

Hmm got it in writing, is that slander or libel?

Time to post how rude I was I think

I think you meant to reply to the thread rather than send me a private message. Please be kind enough to repost on the thread where everyone can help.

hmm, I can't quite see the rudeness in that reply...

    what does that mean?
Please ask all technical questions in your thread. I am not able to answer technical questions in pm for two reasons
    1. I do not login every day, therefore you would get a quicker answer by asking the question publicly

    2. There is no such thing as a dumb question and if you feel embarrassed that you don't understand something, then you should not. To answer your question in pm denies others who want the answer to the same question

    Rude as well? Jcornett replies:

I totally understand that you want to do this IN the thread, but I only sent you the PM Because I posted my Question for you In the thread (TWICE) and you never answered... so after 2 days, I decided to send the PM.

I would REALLY appreciate the help.
so please go to the link and answer my question. I have posted it there.

    Thanks!
Again you are expecting a personal answer. I am somewhat overloaded right now.

ok, so I have said no 3 times now. Again he replies

    I do not "expect" anything....

I THOUGHT you were trying to help me and I Thought we were having a discussion on the thread. I simply asked for you to clarify ONE small part of your last post.
I DID post the question on the thread but it was ignored or not seen, so after days, I PM'd you and thought you could answer it quickly.

now I have donewhat you wanted AGAIN and posted my SIMPLE question to the thread only to be Scolded by you like I am a child.

IF you can help, I would greatly apprecite it if you would respond on the thread.
(I just need and explanation as to how to logg into "bios")

but if I there is some real reason you will not help there, I would love to know.

My final reply - jcornett did not reply to this.
    ***************************************
That was not my intention. Right now my excuses for not helping are the fact that my husband has just told me about his affair and that he wants a divorce and that I am the one who has to leave... my home, my children.

I have a number of university assignments that need my urgent attention.

I have a stinking cold and am unable to think straight

Getting into bios is a matter of reading the screen at start up. Most machines use the del key when hit del to enter setup or enter bios is displayed
compaqs f10 when the cursor flashes on the right
    others are many and vaired.

    ************************************************** ****

Jcornett... Would you like to see the letter my husband wrote which he emailed to me? I mean, it seems you want total proof that I have better things to do than sort our your sound query.

If that was the case than you solved your own problem, but beware it was a easy fix if you had just un-installed WMP9 and re-installed it

the ppl here just try to help if you give them the time...........
