hp laserjet 4pm printing is faint

I have an hp laserjet 4pm whose printing suddenly went faint when I lost my driver, downloaded another and tested it. The test print on the printer comes out fine, the data is getting through, but the printing is extremely faint. I have two computers networked through a router and a cable modem. The other computer also prints very faint.

I would be delighted if someone could offer solutions as it is now the weekend in New Zealand and the HP freephone number is no longer is active.

Could be the print settings are using a lower quality setting to save on toner (economy printing, or "rough draft").
