    PCMCI - USB 2.0 & USB 2.0 external hard

    Dear, Sirs!
I have the problem with External Case for 3.5" hard disks using USB 2.0 (model Chronos HD-337-U2). I have no USB 2.0 in my laptop (Compaq Presario 2700 EA) only USB, so I had to buy PCMCI - USB 2.0 card model: UB 200 from ARGOCY (www.argocy.nl). PCMCI drivers were installed by me as described in users manual, i.e. after installation I had upgraded drivers for USB 2.0 Root Hub device & Card Bus to USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller. When I was using External Case via USB 1.1 hard drive was visible and I could read & write any files on it, after installation PCMCI - USB 2.0 card and after connection External Case via USB 2.0 I had encontered the problem my PC asking the hard (red LED is lighting on the External Case, there is two LEDs on case - red and green), but then some frizing with RED LED and External Storage divice disapeared from dialog box for safety removing any external divices (in the right low corner of descktop), and from "My computer". After restarting the computer files or folders wich were tried to be accessed lost. After some such actions after rebooting I found that all my external hard (120 Gb) was not formated and all info was lost. Please help me to dicide my problem. Thanks in advance!

After installation of all drivers as described in manual I have following USB controllers in Device manager:

CardBus to USB 2.0 Enhanced Host controller
Nec PCI to USB Open Host Controller
Nec PCI to USB Open Host Controller
Standard Universal PCI to USB Host controller
Standard Universal PCI to USB Host controller
Standard Universal PCI to USB Host controller
    USB 2.0 Root Hub Device
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub
    USB Root Hub

If I want to connect external mobile rack with USB 2.0 interface it's not be recognised by operational System.
Please help me to decide the problem.
After system restoring and istalling drivers again system found Hi speed storage, but could not install correctly it, and gave the message that device will not work properly.

Bios is updated, Win XP SP1 installed.

    Welcome to Windrivers marinero

The problem with some of the disk drives is that they need too much power. Most are supplied with an extra power cable incase the computer/usbport cannot provide enough. Given your setup, I think this will be your problem.

I just recently did a similar setup using an asus Laptop and a Plextor USB 2 external dvd writer. Now granted it isnt a harddrive but when I went ot load the USB 2 as the pcmcia card called for it would not work at all but when I went to pick compatible hardware it allowed a generic USB 2.0 hub. Then it installed and the dvd drive worked perfect. Now I think if you try the same sort of thing using a driver update on the usb 2.0 root hub it may give you the opportunity to set it as a generic USB 2.0. I assume this is a Windows XP generic USB 2.0
Now we had the same issues sort of as you . The dvd wiould freeze and quit working then it would disappear. Sometimes a reboot brought it back and sometimes not . A complete power off cycle was needed.
    Hope this helps you
Also we had no issues using the USB 1.1 same as you, although it was slow

For me I went to device manager to the usb root hub and did a driver update . Then when it asks to search I said no. Then in the next window it asks what device and shows a list of manufacturers. At that point I click Compatible devices. The under microsoft was a generic USB root hub 2.0 I choose that and ignored it when it said these drivers wern"t written for this I clicked continie anyway

In my situation installation has tow steps:
1). Run Setup.exe without PC card in slot, then rebooting.
2). After rebooting insert card into the Laptop, and Win XP found drivers by itself. But as described in installation manual I should go to Divece manager and Update drivers(in the device manager “NEC PCI to USB Enhanced host Controller B1” was updated to “CardBus to USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller”, “USB Root Hub” was updated to “USB 2.0 Root Hub Device” no any conflicts were found). But new drivers were taken from installation of Setup.exe (i.e. from maker). At what stage of installation I should go to Divece Manager to install Generic Driver?

So, I understood that I don't need to run Setup.exe from maker, just put PCMCI-USB 2.0 into slot, and try to install generic Microsoft drivers, is it correct?

Hey Marinero, presario 2700 has problem with ANY PCMCIA USB 2.0 Adapter,
just give it up, there's no hope for us.

I already submitted this problem to compaq 2 years ago,
they never want to solve this problem.

    Marinero it is there...

When you start the update driver wizard, there are TWO options - you want "install from a list or specific location radio button" - its the second one down. Then click next, then you click "don't seach, I will choose the driver to install" radio button. Click Next. Check the box show compatible hardware and you will see generic usb2 information.
