Verrrry interesting! Spy? Virus?
Hi folks,
I am looking at a system that is showing me something I've not seen at all... and I'm amazed at the ingenuity.
Basically, a number of applications -- I've only tested with ad/spy removal apps -- are INVISIBLE and can not be executed. If you rename the EXEs, though, they will show and up and work.
I approached the system with a disk I use for a lot of cleanups. I just made a new one though, so when I put the disk in and saw that "Hijackthis.exe" "CoolWebShredder.exe" "Spybotsd.exe," etc, were missing, I was a little upset with myself.
But the files were visible in another system. WTF?!
So, I made a new disc and renamed the exes. They showed up and I could run them.
Anyone seen something like this?
I am about to pop the HDD in an enclosure to run a virus scan on it from trend micro.

you talking to yourself again valet?
Glad you found the answer!
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
