2000 Repair Help
If you believe your registry is corrupt in Windows 2000. What would be the correct procedure to replace it using the recovery console? Is the registry in it's original form (at the time of installation) backed up?
Thanks, Kelly

Welcome to windrivers kelly. The recovery console does not have a registry repair utility, although microsoft does have one available for dowload. Your other options would be to try the Last Known Good Configuration option or an over the top (repair) install
Probability factor of one to one...we have normality, I repeat we have normality. Anything you still can't cope with is therefore your own problem.

Thanks for the quick reply. Safe Mode and Last Known Good Configuration both hang after the login. I have install 98 over-the-top and done a Windows 2000 parallel install, but how would you install Windows 2000 over-the-top without touching the user data?
Thanks,
Kelly

Run setup ALL the way to the screen where it asks which partition you wish to put the installation on. If it detects a repairable installation, it will offer the option to repair the existing installs. Documents and settings are not usually overwritten unless you use the same user names or the directory is corrupt.
You then boot the 2k install and take ownership of the old docs and settings files and folders. Create new profiles and copy in the old data.
To be absolutely safe, you dump the docs and settings folder to another hard drive by hooking up the hard drive with the corrupt installation to a known good xp or 2k machine as a slave.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

You can manually restore a backup of the registry by booting to the recovery console and going to "C:\WINNT\system32\config" the backups are "system.alt" and "user.alt" Rename the system file to "system.old" then rename the "system.alt" to just "system"
