Welcome to WD lurker. Do you mean msvcrt.dll?
If so try these fix first before reinstalling:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default...56&Product=w98

EXACT error messages are needed by the way.

When you say you try to reload Win98, which process do you follow?

Normally I would boot from floppy (with CD drivers) and run the Win98 installation from the Win98 CD. It should "repair" the existing installation. I've done tis loads of times, and it's never said that the OS already existed.... It's not an ideal solution, but it's good in an emergency.

How _exactly_ do you re-load Win98?

    I would normally use:

    1. boot from floppy with CDROM device drivers
    2. cd d: (or cd e:, depending on where your CDROM drive is
    3. cd win98
    4. setup

    Then follow setup wizard.

I had similar problems to you with my Mum's old PC. It was a Celeron processor, and motherboard had some sort of VIA chipset. It gave me no end of trouble... You can download patches from VIA, but they never 100% fixed the problem. Might be worth a try though, if you have a VIA chipset.
