What does UPS/FedEx do after the 3rd delivery attempt?

I was just wondering what fedex and ups do after the 3rd delivery attempt if there is no one home? Do they return to the sender or do they leave it at a place you can pick it up? Is there a way to tell them to try and delivery to the neighbours if no one if home?

    Thanks

You have to go pick it up at their depot. Find the local one in your area and call them. They will set the package aside and you can go pick it up.

You may need ID when you get it. Seems to depend upon the package and the person at the place.

Let me guess, you got one of those little slips notifying you of delivery. Did you call the phone number on the ticket, contact your local delivery office? Come on man, use your head here!!!

No, I didnt get a delivery slip, I just saw on the online tracking that they attempted to deliver while the cleaning lady was home and there were fees that she didnt pay.

So I didnt go to school today so they could deliver it because I thoguht they sent it back to the sender after the 3rd attempt, anyway there's no UPS facitity in like 11 miles so it's a bit far to go each time I get a delivery, I normally just leave school an hour early when I'm expecting one but they attempted to delier this one at 10:30 AM friday, so I assumed it woul be early again to day, and it was here about at 10:15 AM.

With normal post deliveries they leave it at the post office 2 minutes away from here so thats not a problem, its just when I get UPS/Fedex deliveries.

    Thanks

So again, have you called the local sort facility??? These are the guys that are handling your package, and can by far better answer your question than anyone here...

This reminds me of the time when a dude was having trouble with Internet performance for his shop, and came here asking if the whole Internet was under attack or something.

Just call the sort facility and tell them you are going to come pick it up. Then it'll be there waiting for you.

Or you can advise them of a time to deliver after. Like if you don't get home from school until after 1:00pm, then tell them not to deliver until after 1:30pm. That way you'll be home to receive it.

They can actually do that!?! Last time I asked when it will be delivered they normally just say "between 8 and 5". Do I just have to call ups and they can keep track that all deliveries to my address should be after 1pm (I go to college from 7-12)?

    Thanks

It depends on the sort facility, and their procedures...You must call them to know for sure how they will handle this for you!!!

I think Ya_know suggested that you should just call them.

Ya_Know is 100 percent correct. Call them.

I have a good working relationship with my ups lady. With the amount of shipments we get at home, I was having an issue with no one being home. I was able to show her a place the packages would be secure, so there was no threat of loss or any other problems. You would be surprised on how well they will work with you, if you only ask!

Yeah, I'm sure you showed the UPS lady a place where she could secure your "package".

Again, Ya Know has the best answer, but here are some answers to your questions anyway. I can only tell you what UPS does as I know little about Fed-Ex.

If UPS is not successful in delivering a package to you, they will mail you a postcard telling you this. The postcard will explain what the problem is (you were not home, they can not find your address, COD is due, etc. etc.). The postcard will tell you where your package is being held, and for how long. It will also have a phone number you can call to make alternate arrangements, get directions, etc. For example, if your Grandma lives down the street and can arrange to be home, call the number on the postcard and have the package forwarded to her house instead. UPS does not want to return your package to the sender. This costs them money, upsets you, and upsets the sender.

Can you ask UPS to deliver packages to your address late in the day if you are typically gone in the morning? That depends on the route. In my case, I live on a main road and my driver goes by my house at least twice a day. My driver can either deliver early in the day when he starts his route, or catch me at the end of the day on his way back to the UPS facility. Your address may or may not be a similar situation.

You can get more answers by calling 800/PICK-UPS. If you call this number and for whatever reason you are not satisfied with the answer, you can ask to talk to somebody at a local facility. You will not find the phone number for your local facility in the phone book. The call center, as you mentioned, may give you general information such as, it will be delivered between 8 and 5. If you speak to the local facitilty, they should be a able to give you a better estimate. However, it is just an estimate. Your driver probably goes past your house at pretty much the same time each day, but changes do occur. For example, your driver may be on vacation, so a sub may be driving the route. The sub will probably be slower.
