Unhappy New Mon on Radeon 7000 reverts to 1024x768 on every reboot

Since adding a new Benq 19" LCD as monitor #1 and changing the rez to 1280x1024 (just on that monitor) it always reverts to 1024x768 on reboot.

I don't even know how to tell if this is a vid driver issue or not.

Montitor #2 on the same card was always a Viewsonic 17 and was always 1024x768.

The props dialog for resolution for the Benq gives me choices like 800x600, 1024x768, two more, and 1280x1024, which is the native rez and you really need to run this display at that level.

This is of course an older video card and it's one of those "made for ATI" or "powered by ATI" cards, which I think means ATI chipset but not made by them. Getting updated drivers last year was painful.

Current driver, from device manager, "RADEON 7000 SERIES" says DRIVER DATE 6/25/2003, Version 6.14.10.6368, digitally signed.

Anyone have a clue for me??

XP reverts to old resolution on reboot

I finally have my XP pro machine more or less working the way I want except for this new wrinkle that popped up when I dumped my twitchy 17" monitor and replaced it with a 19" LCD.

I'm using an older ATI Radeon 7000 card with two VGA outputs and one SVideo. I'm not using the SVideo for anything.

The new Benq 19" LCD is monitor #1 and changing the rez to 1280x1024 (just on that monitor) it always reverts to 1024x768 on reboot.

Montitor #2 on the same card was always a Viewsonic 17 and was always 1024x768.

The props dialog for resolution for the Benq gives me choices like 800x600, 1024x768, two more, and 1280x1024, which is the native rez and you really need to run this display at that level.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Well, have you tried updating the video driver? Also, is the monitor configured as pnp or via a driver?

Yeah, you may just need the driver for the LCD monitor so the OS knows EXACTLY what it is capable of. Also, make sure the refresh rate is set at 60 or so for an LCD.

    Hi,
As a first step I would Download Catalyst Drivers - your driver is very old.

Check wether the two screens are acting as seperte screens (not extension or clone).

I will be "lurking" here for your reply,

So methinks any 'new' driver will do the same as its by 'design', but make a restore point, & get the latest ones anyway to see ...

Are you using the digital out to make what should be the second monitor your primary ? (cards with one analogue & one digital out aren't true multi-monitor as far as windows is concerned, needs two actual chips or a device that can be identified seperately to work '100%' - you may have to live with this or find some compromise)

Like what it tells you here ?

Because I think if you do that you just confuse the hell out of windows & it'll try to set the primary display as far as its concerned with its properties, which the ati panel just merrily swaps around for you ..

Try as an experiment setting both as 1280x1024 (if the crt can do this ?) - what's that do ?

Please don't make multiple postings on the same subject !

It makes life hard for us & pisses off those of us who will venture answers.

I apologize if I am misunderstanding,.. but I am not clear on something. You should make sure the latest drivers for your monitor are installed (i.e.,.. in display properties it should show your LCD monitor and not "plug and play"). I know it seems fundamental, but the reason XP is reverting back to the old settings is because those are default for a 19" monitor and XP doesn't know what else it can possibly do because I believe it's not detecting the new monitor correctly.

Oh,.. and display properties should be set from Windows display properties and NOT from the Radeon one.

This is the third thread you have started with the same question. Please stop posting the same question in multiple forums. It just confuses everyone and makes it difficult to know what has already been suggested.

Wink i know whats your problem

Your problem are the catalist drivers you have installed. And i suspect you are also on 4 bits resolution no?

The solution is to uninstall the catalist drivers, edit the registry to clean all the garbage that catalist drivers produce, and clean the oldfiles:

    1. Go into the Control Panel and under the ADD/REMOVE SOFTWARE icon uninstall the ATI MultiMedia software and/or the ATI DVD software.

    2. Uninstall the ATI drivers also found in the Add/Remove section. Once removed, it will prompt you to reboot....select NO.

    3. In Device Manager, uninstall the display adapter. Select NO if it asks you to reboot.

    4. Search for files called oem*.inf containing ATI Technologies ; you should find a few files named, for example, oem0.inf, oem1.inf. Open them and double check that they acctually contain ATI Technologies in them. Delete them. note: if windows search comes up with no results go into tools->folder options->view and untick the "hide extensions for known file types" and search again

    5. Search for files called oem*.pnf. Delete the ones that have the same file names as the oem*.inf files you deleted in step 4. Example: If you deleted oem2.inf in step 4, now delete oem2.pnf.

    6. Reboot.

    7. When returning to Windows, the NEW HARDWARE FOUND wizard will come up and will tell you that it has found a new VGA card and will prompt you for drivers. Hit CANCEL!

    8. Now, go to START - SEARCH - FOR FILES OR FOLDERS and do a search for all files and folders on your windows installation drive using the filename ati*.*
Delete all the files except ones that are located in a .cab file and ones whose path includes a folder called ReinstallBackups (you may not have any of these, don't worry). Now go to your Recycle Bin and Empty your bin.

    9. Next...time to go to your Registry. Go to START -- RUN -- regedit

Here go to key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -- SYSTEM -- ControlSet001 -- Control -- Video . Here there should be 4 entries. 3 of them are default Windows XP entries and the 4th one is put in by the ATI drivers. Expand each one by one until you see ATI entries. Once found, erase the entire key.

Now repeat the same step above for the ControlSet002 key and the CurrentControlSet Key. Normally, whenever you erase a key in the ControlSet001, XP automatically deletes it in the CurrentControlSet section too. So if the ATI key is not found in the CurrentControlSet section, don't worry about it.
Once all keys are deleted, proceed to the next step.

    10. While still in the registry, go to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -- SOFTWARE section. Here you should find an ATI Technologies key. Select it and delete it. In that same section, look for an Installed Options key. Expand it and there you should find another ATI Technologies key. Select it and erase it.

    11. Still in the registry, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER -- Software and there you should find another ATI technologies key. Select it and erase it. Once all this is done, close the registry. the registry is now clean.

    12. Close all windows and reboot.

    13. When in windows after the reboot the NEW HARDWARE FOUND WIZARD will pop up again. Cancel that. Now find the new ATI drivers that you have downloaded. Extract them and run the SETUP file (or just run the .exe). Once complete, reboot and you are done. You may want to reinstall your ATI MMC software and DVD software if you use them. You can the latest ones at the ATi website ( http://www.ati.com ). DONE! You should have no more problems.

    Thanks for the reply.

Do you know where I can get Catalyst drivers? I've never heard of them. What are they, something from ATI?

I don't understand extension or clone. WindowsXP properties screen has a checkbox for each monitor ("Display") "Use this device as my primary" and "Extend my desktop onto this monitor".

I don't seem to have any choice about these checkboxes on the first monitor, they are both checked and greyed out.

On the viewsonic (2nd) "Use as primary is not checked and is greyed out. I just added a check to "Extend desktop onto this" to get the second monitor to come up.

As I said, I can configure it and use it all I like. It just looses track of things when I shut down.

Thanks in advance for any info.
