Runtime error 216
keep getting this runtime error, it seems to occur when i open folders, when i first start windows, and when i first open the internet. My pc is also 10x times slower than it used to be and the internet persistantly crashes which sometimes means rebooting.
ive scanned with norton systemworks and it aint a virus, and ive checked for sub7 trojen, as this is what the symptoms seem to suggest but i have come up with nothing.
aslo scanned with fully updated adaware and spybot....
dont wanna be reformating my pc again so can anyone help???

Geezer
So welcome to windrivers Monkfish.
Your symptoms thus far scream 'malware', though it may be something else entirely but lets have a bash with HijackThis (the 'daddy' of malware finders/removers) to see - please post whatever log it spits out (may be loooooooong !)
Also Norton is notorious for getting its knickers in a twist when updated several times, procure yourself a fresh install & de-install/re-install to make sure ..
Also please confirm you have all windows update 'critical' patches at least & confirm for us which version of xp you've got, home or pro ?

Right I didn't forget you .. just damn busy - I wrote a flipping reply but I appear to have forgotten to press enter on it (can't now drive 20 miles back to do it - they'll be shut) - you've definately got some malware & that's maybe stopping the updates ? ...
I'll try & google most of your entries this evening while I'm at home, so hang tight & I'll have further instructions for you & maybe we can fix it ..

Geezer
Ok so this post is a 'work in progress' .. I'll be back editing it from time to time as & when I google that big list, I'll put something like 'done !' at the end or somesuch tosh when I've been through the lot ..
Currently ruuning processes
C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe
All windows stuff (though note svchost can carry nasties in it{container process}, but almost always there's another entry to cause the malware to fire)
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NORTON~2\GHOSTS~2.EXE
C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe
C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton Utilities\NPROTECT.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\SPEEDD~1\nopdb.exe
What it says ! Norton AV stuff (symantec own norton)
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ZipToA.exe
So same comments as above about scvhost & I dunno what the hell ziptoa.exe is, if you don't & no one else says it 'good' then I'd be having rid of it
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe
Another norton entry
C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton Ghost\GhostStartTrayApp.exe
Ghost startup app -useless unless you actually want to run ghost all the time at startup.
C:\Program Files\Iomega\DriveIcons\ImgIcon.exe
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe
C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe
C:\Program Files\Elaborate Bytes\CloneCD\CloneCDTray.exe
C:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe
C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe
so presumably we have some kind of Iomega drive hanging about, qttask is quicktime but un-ncessary at startup, realpalyer the same, clonecdtray is just one of those dumb quick start icons that you don't really need, winampa like realplayer, don't need it all the time, MSN messenger I think is really a big virus , but the guys at M$ might get upset with me for saying that , wuaclt is a windows update thingee & probably meant to be there (runs as & when), msmsgs is the 'live' bit of messenger which tells you when folks are online etc, & explorer.exe is of course meant to be there ..
C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\Agent\mcagent.exe
c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsshld.exe
c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsescn.exe
c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsrte.exe
c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsftsn.exe
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Tom\Desktop\HijackThis.exe
Lots more norton stuff, IE & Hijackthis which all seem ok
(I dunno why the hell I went through all that, the next bit is what loads it all up ! .. I guess you at least now know what should be running & why )
BHO (browser helper objects - very often this is where the 'nasties' hide) & Registry entries ..
(it might be quicker to say what to leave ! anyway ..)

Oh yeah, you've got some nasties:
Alchemy, Clearsearch, to name only two.
Listen, best here is to go to this link and follow the instruction listed in NooNoo's article first and after running Adaware and Spybot (in safe mode if you must) get back to us with a new log. That will give us much less work.

Oh so nobody took the hint .. ah well I'll google 'em all then shall I ? ( big HINT: monkfish )
So with no googling whatsoever (experience counting here, so don't take me too seriously earlier ) - I'd have rid of this lot
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchURL = C:\WINDOWS\system32\searchbar.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = C:\WINDOWS\system32\searchbar.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = C:\WINDOWS\system32\searchbar.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = C:\WINDOWS\system32\searchbar.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = C:\WINDOWS\system32\searchbar.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://e-plus.cc/search.php?aff_id=46&keyword=%s
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = C:\WINDOWS\system32\searchbar.html
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {707E6F76-9FFB-4920-A976-EA101271BC25} - (no file)
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}_ - (no file)
& the file searchbar.html
There's more to do yet .. but a couple of questions - is microsoftmoney meant to be on here or not ?, because there's some keys here which might be either a 'mussed up' or partial install of it, or some malware trying to use its keys ..
You might also like to look at all your 'run' keys for me too & confirm you actually want all that lot running at startup or not .. all them tray icons just suck up resources, when a desktop shortcut instead won't - & do we really need to update every single program every single time we start up & have processes contantly running to check they are up to date ? - I don't think so - probably you only 'need' your AV doing that ..
Also confirm for me just what version of office you have, OSA9.exe is generally never needed at all & is a big fat resource hog (it might also account for why I can't sus your m$ money keys too).
& on your direct question earlier - 'cant load bridge.dll' - well you removed this key :- O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9C691A33-7DDA-4C2F-BE4C-C176083F35CF} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\bridge.dll
earlier, so methinks get the matching 'run' entry too
So another pause in the proceedings while you consider that lot ...
Oh bloody edit : !!
Also please of course post a new log {man I hate them ! they are sooooo loooong!}, with your changes which hopefully will be a bit shorter , mine for instance only has 8 entries on it ..

Yes, sorry for the "delay" as well, and leaving you out there all alone -ed. It seems that at times we ALL go through that. Anywho; you STILL have some little nasties:

This may be a dialer download, but whatever it is: you don't want it there. Next thing you know with one misclick and your phone bill will have skyrocketed.. Check it in HJ and remove.
And this one:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intdctrr] C:\WINDOWS\System32\idctup20.exe
You'll also want to delete it from within Explorer.
Good job otherwise. And, you may not be wanting two av programs on your pc, esp running at the same time. Mind you, I have like four for testing purposes, but ONLY one runs in the background. Geesh, each one of the two you have can be problematic by themselves. No telling what problems both running at the same time could cause.
The following can be safely gotten rid of (and you'll be wanting to run msconfig and check the entries in there):
C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NORTON~2\GHOSTS~2.EXE
C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\SPEEDD~1\nopdb.exe
C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe
C:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
Two I want to know more about (let us know if either sound familiar to you with what you have on your pc)

Hey cheeky boy, I got that one, failure to read earlier posts properly syndrome applies now - though I've got it permanently, so who am I kidding ?
& the two installer cabs Trip is asking for confirmation for at the end of your post look bad to me too & I'd delete them - my av got very upset with the second when I clicked it, got a heuristics match (that's a pattern that might be viral, but isn't for sure) - the first goes nowhere
