Wireless and DSL

Have a user at home who has wireless and DSL some times the DSL modem some times you have to reset it and reboot every thing. The lap top is Windows XP and the Desktop is 98 all on wireless. It seems to quit sending and recieveing and you have to turn off and on to get it all working or it looses connection some times.
has any one seen this.

What type of wireless router is in there?
Portable phones can cause havoc around wireless connections

It is a linksys wireless router and access point

I have a netgear wireless router. It would lock up after about 30 minutes.

I called the netgear support and they had me upgrade the firmware.

It took care of the problems. It now works like a charm. You might want to check to see if an upgrade would help. It fixed my problem..

THe story of my wireless life, except i just cant get the admin at my university to upgrade the 3Com AP's. I too have to just put it on and off.

As said above, check to see if there's a firmware update for your modem & your router.

And as ferrit said, cordless phones are a problem if they're in the same htz range as your router. If you're using a 2.4ghz router, get a 900mhz cordless phone.

Buy a Cisco/Aironet

You can get an AP350 on ebay for ~200 bucks. If nothing else you'll discover the joy of configuring one via console.

Not all, some of the newer 802.11g routers are 5Ghz.

There are no G only routers that use the 5GHz band - 2.4GHZ is for B and G, 5GHz is for A ONLY!!!

So, to use 5GHz, you'd need an A or an A/G. A is dead - forget about it. Wait for I this summer!

I had a problem like this with a westell DSL modem and a Linksys router. I had to switch the modem to gateway mode, by default it is set as a router and assigns ips by dhcp. To do this you have to connect a computer directly to the modem and access the configuration page with an web browser. Check you modem manual for details.
