Exclamation V90 - Most useful test!

This info which I found in a BB response is the most important/useful I have found anywhere!

"There is a sure fire way to know if you're connecting with the V.90 capabilities. If your connection speed ends in an odd number (45333, or 49333) then the v.90 technology is working correctly. (56K modems connect every 2000bps while V.90 modems connect ever 1333bps)"

that is totally correct. Also if you have a 56k/v90 modem and you are connecting at 115000 or 576000 then it is also not using 56k / v90 protocols either

i found this post interesting.my normal connection speed is 48000.last night i checked and it was 49333.i dont think you can
use it as benchmark for my odd one percent of the time.

although last nights speed is the highest i have ever seen the internet was unusuable.i seen paint dry quicker and called it a day.

most users mistake the connection speed as the the actual speed the modem is running at, at that particular time. All the connection speed is the negotiating speed between the modem in the users system and the link to the ISP. If the ISP does not use V90 then Mark W's post is a good test, although I have noticed recently that my own V90 modem and V90 ISP have been negotiating at different speeds. A lot of the connection speeds problems lie with the quality if the telephone line. If there is a little more noise than normal then the connection speed will drop. If the line is crystal clear then the connection speed will be higher although anything above 49333 is not using a 56k/V90 connection.

    Question

"although anything above 49333 is not using a 56k/V90 connection."

    Why is that?

"Anything over 49333 is not V90"??

Where do you come up with something like that?? I connect at 50,666 most of the time. A V90 connectiong also has a distinct sound when the connection is being made, the phaser sound (that's what I call it), therefore I know I'm connected using V90.

    Get your facts straight.

It is called having family members who work for British Telecom and ISPs, so before you flame, THINK!!!!!!!!!

Also this so called Phazer sound is utter rubbish as no modem that I have ever seen or used ( and believe me it is a lot )makes any sound different to any other negotiating noise. Both USR and Rockwell modems make the same noise when connecting at their own respective protocols ( K56Flex or X2 ) as they do when using V90.

I agree with Darren that V90 does not have any other response than any other 56K connection BUT a 56K conenction is VERY differant from a V34 etc. connection. The noise I call a "BONG"may be the Phaser sound reffered to and is specific for all 56K.

The only modems that make a BONGING noise are the 3COM / USR range, but it sounds nothing like a phaser, and a rockwell chipset based modem makes a different noise altogether. They make the same noise regardless of connection protocol or speed.

For more info on this matter read here ( especially towards the end of the page ) http://www.computingcentral.com/topi...peedtest50.asp

but since my last posting the modem has
achieved that magical figure of 50666.it has
taken 9 months to do this maybe hayes modems
    are slow starters.
