    Runtime 216 Error

Following is the error I get:

Runtime Error at 216 at 00c93812
In addition I receive this error also along with it:

0x00c93812 Referenced Memory at 0x00D59A90. The Memory could not be read.

Following is the Hijack this log in it's entirity as I copied it from the Hijack this program. Hope it is complete and you will be able to help me solve my problem.

Spamanilator is what I use to check my email. Spybot and Adaware are self explanatory. SecretMaker is what I use to help with cookies and pop ups. Before this week, I've not had these "Errors" come up. I have not installed anything new.

I've run my AVG, and have had two different virus' show up that it was able to heal/delete. One was in the "restore" section. Let me know what other information you may need in order to help me.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions you give me.

Did some looking on some of these: Haven't CHANGED ANYTHING!!
Thanks ya'll for looking at this. The rest of the things seemed to be "legitimate" in as far as I did download things such as Adobe Acrobat Reader 6, Spamanhilator, Secretmaker. I appreciate any and all help in fixing this problem.

This one refers to my SecretMaker. What do I do about the file missing?

I have Spybot and it has Lock hostfile Read only against hijackers checked. The other two boxes are unchecked. Should something be checked that isn't and should the one checked; be unchecked?

One other thing that may help is that when I try to SEND mail from Outlook Express 6 my computer Crashes. I mean totally and has to do the check disc. This has happened twice so far now. One when sending a regular email and one when sending one with an attachment, that I had just made, that had no virus. Is this a coincidence or is it part of the runtime problem? Don't know if you need this information or not, but better safe than sorry.

Welcome to WinDrivers Dshadna. The messages you are getting to not seem like spyware. They are usually the result of a program or dll calling a file that is not there. What are you doing when you get these messages? Do they come together or are they independent of one another? In both cases the error message should also include a reference to the program which had the runtime error or tried to reference the memory.

As a start, clear you IE cache and go into your temp directories and clear the tmp files. If you have difficulty finding the temp directories, go to System Properties/Advanced/Environment Variables. They will be two listings, one under user variables and one under system variables. Then clear your recycle bin. After that run chkdsk /f.
Probability factor of one to one...we have normality, I repeat we have normality. Anything you still can't cope with is therefore your own problem.

I would also do a memtest just for the sake of reassurance that there isnt any issues.
Mem chips do develop problems out of the blue I just sent one back and had it replaced. Mine was giving me random memory cannot be read errors
I would use goldmem it makes a boot disk and it seems to be the most reliable that I know of

I'd like to thank you for your prompt replies. I know some about computers; just enough most likely to get me into trouble, so I hope you'll understand if I ask questions before doing something I don't understand. Thanks again ya'll.

What are you doing when you get these messages? Do they come together or are they independent of one another? In both cases the error message should also include a reference to the program which had the runtime error or tried to reference the memory.

Normally, I'm "surfing" the web. I use IE6 for my browser. It tends to happen the most when I'm going to close out the browser windows after being on the net for some time. The two messages come one after the other. The one that mentions Referenced Memory is first and the Runtime Error 216 is second.

These are the programs that are always running in my task bar if that may be of any consequence.
    • SecretMaker--(Empties my cookies and is a pop-up blocker.)
    • ZoneAlarm--(Firewall)
    • Spaminalihator--(Checks email for Spam)
    • SpyBot-SD Resident--(IE bad download blocker) (Something about Active X bad scripts?)
    • AVG--(AntiVirus Resident Shield)

    0x00c93812 Referenced Memory at 0x00D59A90
That's all it has for Referenced Memory. I've tried to Google to see what that is, but not getting anywhere.

I have a question about what you suggest here:

As a start, clear you IE cache and go into your temp directories and clear the tmp files. If you have difficulty finding the temp directories, go to System Properties/Advanced/Environment Variables. They will be two listings, one under user variables and one under system variables. Then clear your recycle bin. After that run chkdsk /f.
I found the Environment Variables and the Temp and TMP files or Directories. Do I delete the TMP from that location or is there somewhere else that I should be doing it from? I don't want to delete something that should be left intact.

I would also do a memtest just for the sake of reassurance that there isnt any issues.
Mem chips do develop problems out of the blue I just sent one back and had it replaced. Mine was giving me random memory cannot be read errors
I would use goldmem it makes a boot disk and it seems to be the most reliable that I know of
    http://www.goldmemory.cz

I'll try this. It's an old computer an EMachines 533Mhz with only a 7GB harddrive and 256 RAM. The RaM was replaced about 1 1/2 years ago.

One more question about something that was in the HiJack this Log.
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A491D208-B353-490F-B81A-A8A3DC97042D} - "C:\WINDOWS\System32\smiehlp.dll (file missing)
I was able to reference this by doing a search on several different sites. It has something to do with the SecretMaker. Should I uninstall the SecretMaker and reinstall it? Just want to be certain before doing something that might make matters worse.

Thanks again to you both for answering my questions and for being patient with me if I don't understand a step that you suggest.

BTW; may I ask the resident Stupid Question of the day?

How do you create a Boot Disk? I mean literally step by step.

    Thanks.

I'm surprised that there is not a program reference. Usually there is an application name where you have 0x00c93812 (for example, excel.exe referenced memory...). Perhaps if you look in Event Viewer.

I found the Environment Variables and the Temp and TMP files or Directories. Do I delete the TMP from that location or is there somewhere else that I should be doing it from? I don't want to delete something that should be left intact.

No, you don't want to delete the directory. You want to go into those directories and delete the files with a .tmp extension.

Should I uninstall the SecretMaker and reinstall it? Just want to be certain before doing something that might make matters worse.
I would uninstall SecretMaker and see if that solves the problem. If it has no effect, feel free to reinstall it.

You could also try running sfc /scannow. This will check for missing or corrupted system files. You need to have your xp cd available.

In the case of the program Ferrit referenced, I believe it makes the boot disk for you. Otherwise, the easist way is to go to http://www.bootdisk.com/ and download one. If you want to do it the hard way, read this: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;305595

Ok, here is what I found when I did a search in the Event Viewer (Never even knew there was such a thing or how to find it...so I did a google.

    Event Type: Information
    Event Source: Application Popup
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 26
    Date: 6/11/2004
    Time: 5:19:03 PM

    Computer: DEE

    Description:
Application popup: iexplore.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x00c93812" referenced memory at "0x00d59a90". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
When I followed the link that is in the event viewer, this is what it came up with for me to do.

    Details
    Product: Windows Operating System
    ID: 26
    Source: Application Popup
    Version: 5.2
    Symbolic Name: STATUS_LOG_HARD_ERROR
    Message: Application popup: %1 : %2

    Explanation
The program could not load a driver because the program user doesn't have sufficient privileges to access the driver or because the drive is missing or corrupt.

    User Action
    To correct this problem:

Ensure that the program user has sufficient privileges to access the directory in which the driver is installed.
Reinstall the program to restore the driver to the correct location.
If these solutions do not work, contact Product Support Services.

    Version: 5.0
    Symbolic Name: status_log_hard_error
Message: Unable to Load Device Driver : device driver could not be loaded.

    Explanation
The program could not load a driver because the program user doesn't have sufficient privileges to access the driver or because the drive is missing or corrupt.

    User Action
    To correct this problem:

Reinstall the program to restore the driver to the correct location.

Ok, so now that we have that; How do I know what application that it is referring to, and how exactly do I fix that problem? Thanks for taking the time to help me with this. I'm trying to learn while I do this.

    EDIT TO ASK:

Ok, how exactly do I get to those directories to delete the files? I'll do a google search while waiting for a reply to see if I can figure it out though.

It is referring to iexplore.exe (Internet Explorer), although it could also be a plug-in which the program is trying to use. The listing you referred to earlier [O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A491D208-B353-490F-B81A-A8A3DC97042D} - "C:\WINDOWS\System32\smiehlp.dll (file missing) ] is a possibility. If not that, running sfc /scannow should restore any missing or damaged files.

As far as the tmp files, open each of the temp directories in file explorer and switch to the "Details" view. Them sort by "Type". All the temporary files will be listed together. Delete them.

Ok, I've deleted the TMP files; Uninstalled SecretMaker, then reinstalled it. Ran ChckDisk and Defragmented. I've made certian that I haven't accidently deleted anything necessary. I've Run AVG, SpyBot, AdAware to take care of those things, and did a PandaScan for Virus just to be safe.

The results thus far today. No RunTime Error is showing up. (Today is the first day in over a week that it hasn't come up at least one time). Thank you for your help all of you. If by chance it has problems at a later date; I'll know where to come to get good answers by patient people who know their stuff.
