Trying to upgrade system...

I have a GATEWAY system running Windown 98SE, I have recently starting to upgraded I added more memory and now tried upgrade to XP and realized I don't have enough space...

I have a old Hard Drive that has not been used which came with a Gateway ME system... here is all the info on the drive HARD DRIVE INFO

My Questions are:

1. How do I know if my system is compataible?
2. Even though the drive came w/ ME pre-installed who I need anything
else for it?
3. I heard something about system BIOS what is that and what will I
need to do with it?

Welcome IceChampagne to WD .
Since you say you added memory to your PC I assume you know Mhz your Processer is an such ,
if you could post that for us or check Microsofts site to check min.specs .
That 20g harddrive is big enough and you shouldn't need any software or drivers when you install it .
BIOS is what you see when you first start your PC and you may have to set it to boot from CD if you change hddrives and install XP , but we'll wait to see if its good to go with XP first .

Processor:
Intel Pentium III, 500 MHz
100MHz external bus

BIOS:
Intel Corp. 4W4SB0X0.15A.0019.P14 05/09/2000

But I don't know how to retrieve the above mentioned: "

On the xp disk there's a tool called 'upgrade advisor' (can be updated over the net too to test more stuff) - also in general terms a 'clean' install is more trouble free in the long run than any 'upgrade' (requires some zapping to get done & thus you need space etc to back up)..

Bios is BASIC Input Output System & is stuff inside the machine at a low level you don't really need to know much about, outside windows, in as far as 'upgrade' goes you need to know you have compliant acpi (more techo whatsit) in bios & that's it - running the tool will tell you ..

Here I'd suggest that what you may want is dual boot, until you decide whether xp is 'good for you or not' - that involves having two operating systems at once, but leaves your ME install intact on your current disk, & puts xp on the other & gives you choice of which to start with ..

Run the upgrade advisor tool anyway first before, any other complications.

64MB and below will see a slow box. With XP memory is the key to a fast system.

Actually 64 is the bare minimum below which XP will not even try to install..128 is the minimum recommended, and anything below 256 will be very slow, especially with a low end processor like a 500

Thanks for everyones input and I have changed my hard drive and installed XP but now I notice when I log into Yahoo games it dosen't let the page load up whats up wit that?...

Go on then .. (not that I use such things, but there'll be some geeky explanation attached I'm sure) ..

Can we have a bit more 'exact' explain of whats happening ?

Btw 'really' this is a completely different subject & should therefore have its own thread - different forums get different sorts of members showing up to answer them - but you are 'new & all' ..
