How can I send a Document to File instead of Printer.

I'm running XP and need to divert some accounting documents from the Printer to a file.

In the pre-XP days, I used a program called prn2file but this won't work in XP.

    Any suggestions????

I'm not clear as to what type of file your are trying to save to. There are several ways to do this.

Launch the "Add Printer" wizard. Select Local Printer and deselect "automatically detect". On the next screen, under "use the following port", one of the selections should be "FILE". You can then set up a printer that will send all output to a file.

Alternatively, you could install CutePDF. This is a free utility which allows you to print to a PDF document. http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/Writer.asp

Most applications have a tick box in the printer properties page that comes up when you go to print. It says "print to file" and if it's ticked it will ask you for a location to save the file to rather than sending the job to the printer.

If you use excel for accounting then that has the tick box I mentioned.

    Thanks for the prompt reply.
The program is a DOS program running under XP and therefore prints directly to the default printer. It by-passes Windows Printer setup.
Nominating "File" in the Printer setup has no effect.
    I need a way to re-direct LPT1 to a nominated file.

    It's driving me nuts!!!!
