    ID 10 T Error

Got a machine to fix completly clogged with spy ware, and viruses.

I spent several hours fixing it, I had to take the hard drive out and slave in another machine to do the virus scan.

I had it running fine with hard drive hooked back up, but laying on the desk.

I reinstalled norton, and while the live update was running I thought I'll just screw the hard drive in. Come on who hasn't done it????

I grounded the circuit board of the hd on the case, the Hard drive went clunk clunk, and the os locked up. It would no longer boot.

No attempt at recovering the data was succesful, everything gone.

I took one of my hard drives and replaced it re-installed the os, and then had to tell the customer.

They were a little happier when I told them I was not going to charge them anything, for breaking their computer, but I doubt they will be back.

I'm going to hang that hard drive above my work bench, as a reminder not to be stupid.
    "Really???
What Fun Is A Computer That Works?!?"

PLEASE! Do not mistake my laziness for lack of concern!

Sadly, I have done something similar.

I commend you for your honesty. I had a boss that would have charged the customer through the teeth, and made money...regardless of the mistake. It's hard to find reputable people out there, but you sir, are a definite credit to the industry!

Thats a tough lesson to learn.

I had a similar one on an old notebook. I was removing the heat sheilding from under the keyboard (big metal plate) to get at the cpu heatsink and fan to clean it out. Accidentally touched the motherboard with it. The unit was off and the ac adapter was removed, but I had forgot to remove the battery. ZAP*SIZZLE*SPARK*. $1200 later and out of my company's pocket, he had a new motherboard and was happy as a clam. He went on to become one of our best customers.

A guy opens a drive that's brand new and in warranty? I really cannot think of a good reason to void the warranty in that manner... unless they have more money than sense and were curious about how a hard drive worked.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
