Serial Mouse Problem
Hello all,
I have a PC here, and the guy destroyed his old mouse (banged on the thing), so he asked to have it fixed. His old mouse hooked up to the COM1 port via a PS/2 to Serial adapter. The MB only has a serial connection for the mouse, no other mouse ports. He bought a new mouse, a Kensington ValuMouse Scroll Mouse, PS/2 with a Serial adapter. I try hooking it up, and NOTHING I do will get this mouse working. It is an old machine, Pentium 166Mhz, Win 95............
Any suggestions??
Thanks in advance!!

1. Did you go into device manager and uninstall the old mouse? You might want to do this in safe mode to make sure the mouse is uninstalled.
2. Are you sure the serial adapter is for that mouse? Most adapters aren't inter- changeable?
3. Easiest thing to do is have the guy go to a used computer parts store and for a few dollars get a regular serial mouse (should get a spare while he is at it since he likes to bang them around).

Was the mouse unplugged when he beat it to death?

fierce, it aint gonna work - ps2 serial adapters are at very best hit n miss.
Find him a real serial port mouse or a usb one.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

Did you try having the hardware wizard search for it as a non pnp device?
You could also try installing logitech mouseware. I know you've got a different make, but I've had it discover mice when windows wouldn't.
Have you confirmed that this mouse is capable of a serial connection? Not all ps2 mice can be plugged into a serial adapter and have them work.
Probability factor of one to one...we have normality, I repeat we have normality. Anything you still can't cope with is therefore your own problem.

Those adapters rarely work with older PC's. NooNoo's right - try and get a serial mouse.
