I do too have a sound card!
Hi there! I have this strange problem - since I reinstalled Windows XP my computer tells me I have no sound card - I do too! I tried the Belarc Advisor - and it didn't come up with any sound card, either! What to do?? Under the device manager - "Other devices", I have two faulty units, the "Multimedia Audio Controller" and the "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)". Video playback is working though. What is this??? Happy for any advice...
Cheers,
Isabella, Sweden

Welcome to WinDrivers, Isabella.
It sounds like Windows didn't have suitable drivers for your sound and video cards. Belarc accepts what Windows tells it about an installation, some other diagnostics such as Everest (Aida32) will investigate more thoroughly and may identify the chipsets used.
If you are able to tell us the type of system, we should be able to help. eg if it is a namebrand unit, the Model or Type number. If it's a plain box, you may need to look inside at the mainboard, video card and sound card, but you may prefer to try running Everest on the system and telling us what it reports about the cards:

Another approach is did a driver CD come with the system?

Welcome to windrivers isabella. Belarc won't tell you - it only lists what windows recognizes. Download and run Everest http://www.lavalys.com/products/down...ng=en&pageid=3 and post the Physical Devices report. That will tell us what sound card you have (and your video card, which is apparently not installed properly).
Is this a branded computer? If so, what make and model?

Hi there! Thanks a lot for all of the advice. Everest listed the following under the heading called "Physical Devices". It sure doesn't make any sense to me, hope it does to you...! The text on the outside of the box which holds my computer says "JME DATA". Is that a brand...?
Many, many thanks!
Isabella

OK - Install these:
VIA Chipset driver: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=403 You want version 4.43 (second choice on page), not 4.51
VIA AC97 Audio driver: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=328
Also, install this to fix your video driver problem:
S3 ProSavage DDR video driver: http://ranger.s3graphics.com/viaarena/420drv/

I'm afraid that didn't do the trick. The yellow questionmarks under "other devices" are gone, but the drivers appear under "display adapters" and "sound, video and game controllers" with little red crosses on them. And no sound... Also, my computer has suddenly decided that it doesn't want to read any floppies, i.e. it recognizes the drive but not the diskette. Should I just throw out the computer through the window maybe?

If you click on properties for the devices with the red x's, what message does it give you under device status? Ususally a red x means that it has been disabled. You can try enabling the devices, or, boot into safe mode and delete the devices there, then reboot and let windows redetect them.
