    Cable Modem and Router whoaass...

I've been trying to network my mother's new house for a week now (On and off) and she has a cable modem provided by Roadrunner, and I bought her a Linksys router to make sure the quality is good.

My problem is, I can get the router to obtain a WAN IP, and all 5 computers can get their LAN IP's from the router but, for some reason I can't get the computers to "See" past the router and into the world....

Anyone have advice or experienced this before?? THANKS!!

Some cable companies deliberately refuse to allow the cable feed to be networked. However, most routers have over come this by having a section which allows you to "clone" the mac address of the computer that was originally connected to the cable.

Check the manual for it. You will also need to power cycle the modem - if the company doesn't care about mac addresses, then power cycling the modem will force the modem to look for a new mac address and register that.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

To add to NooNoo's post, Out here in Georgia whenever I connect a router for a subscriber of comcast (and sometimes knology) cable I have to call them and give them the new MAC address of the router, wait 15-30 minutes and then everything is good to go. Might be the case with Poadrunner.

Try taking modem and router off power. Wait one full minute then plug in just modem. Then after solid cable light plug in router.
Then restart all computers and it should all go online.

Unless Roadrunner has changed policies they allow routers, they just dont support them if you have a problem they will reboot both modem and router and if you dont connect they then insist on removing the router to make sure you connect with just the modem.

I did support for them for a short time a year ago, and that was the policy at that time.

Thanks for the input...I've tried everything...I'm going to switch out routers tomarrow to see if this one is bad, if that doesn't work I'm going to ask RR for another Cable modem to see if that will help....

Otherwise, my router see's the WAN and my computers all see the LAN, but the router isn't finishing the connection...has me truly stumped.

Out here on media com,We use a Dlink router and motorola cable modem,
In the Dlink setup theres an option to Clone mac address.
We had to do that to see outside our home network. If memory serves,Its just a matter of typing in a access url to the router setup.
Perhaps in your linksys there a similar feature.

I would suggest looking at the wan IP the router gets from roadrunner and make sure it is geting all the needed information (ip,subnet, gatewayand the DNS servers).
If it seems to be getting all the proper info then check the configuration on the computers to ensure they do not have any static settings pointing to the wrong dns servers. You could try setting all addressing statically and have the three entries for DNS the first being the router (192.168.1.1) and the other two being the roadrunner DNS servers.

Try pinging a site on the internet by both name and IP and see if you can get a reply by both or one or the other.(if they reply from IP and not name then dns is not resolving)

Ensure no software firewalls are running and make sure no proxy servers have been set.

Josey, on each computer, under your TCP/IP settings, 'disable dns' and be sure to enter the 'gateway LAN ip address' of the router, also for wins, 'use dhcp for wins resolution'. (reboot if win98/se).

My gf (a product specialist for RR internet div.) has a particular order to start up the equipment, also... start with everything unplugged and turned off, a minimum of 30 seconds:

Attach the power to the modem, power up, wait for the self test to end, just a power light on.

Attach the cable to the modem, wait for the cable light to go solid.

Attach WAN cable from modem to router.

Power up router. After the router self test, you should see a WAN/PC light solid and a flashing DATA light on the modem. On the router, the WAN light and DATA are lit.

Connect the first PC to the router and power up. Confirm that you have connectivity on the one before you go any further.

As stated earlier by futuretech, RR allows routers, but only if they supply them.

    Hope this helped...

I FINALLY GOT'EM GOING!! I just reset my router back to default and configured both my machines to static IP's on the router (192.168.1.100 and 110)...then let the router grab an IP and boom...all done...

I very much appreciate the advice on making sure it was set as gateway and not router, and the power up sequence...it went smoothly once all the peices fit.. :-)
