MY 60 gig HD is only recognised as 32 gig
I recently was given a HD by a friend. The Hard Drive is a 60 gigabyte samsung sp061N.
When I was given the HD it was formatted at 60 gig, but there were hundreds of files. I wanted to remove the files so I attempted a reformat.
When it came to the reformat option, 32 gig was the maximun recognised, I found I couldn't reformat to its full capacity.
Is there away to solve this issue? or am i stuck with a 32 gig hardrive in the body of a 60 gig hardrive?
Please help

2 possible things come to mind.
1: your bios is only capable of handling 32g
2: the jumpers on the rear of the drive , have been set to 32g limit.
how is the drive recognised by the bios? is it shown as a 60g ?
if it is ,, you may want to run a fdisk/format ,,,there well be hidden partitions (doughtfull)
check the above (1 and 2) ,,if u are still having probs , then reply stating your computer make/model ,,or Exact m/board ,andbios version

What version of windows?
What make/model of computer/motherboard?
Probability factor of one to one...we have normality, I repeat we have normality. Anything you still can't cope with is therefore your own problem.

My system runs Windows XP PRO
CPU = 1.2 AMD Athlon
1 Gig sdram
soundblaster live 5:1
Gforce4 ti 4200 64mb
Motherboard = Gigabyte Technology Co,Ltd 7ZX 1.0
Chipset = VIA KT133A
Southbridge = VIA V2C86
Sensor = VIA 686A/B
Bios is American Megatrends Inc. version 62710, Date 11/14/2000
My system is very old but perfectly suitable for most of todays demands. I am so confused about the hard drive. It was registering 60 gig before the reformat. I used control panel/admin tools/computer management to reformat the HD. I was given no option to make another partition, my computer would only identify 32 gig?
I now wish I had just deleted the files that were already on there instead of being clever and reformatting. "Sigh!" You live and learn. I suppose.

how about borrowing a win98 cd , and doing a fdisk/format,
according to gigabyte , your board "should" support the drive ,,,,,however there is a later bios http://tw.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/...Rev%201.x).htm ,,,check first and only flash if u think it might help

That board should see a 60 gig drive ok...I agree with freddy, some drives came with a special jumper to limit it to 32gig.

Another thing to keep in mind for hard drives & WinXP is "System Recovery" or whatever it is called. Windows automatically allocates a portion of the hard drive to be used for system recovery. I recently had this problem after I installed my 40GB SATA drive and noticed that Windows had allocated roughly 6GBs of it for system recovery. You can go into your system settings (can't remember where exactly) and change it to whatever amount you want.
I changed it back to a little over 1GB. No way I'm giving up 6GB of my HD in case my computer crashes.

It only recognises 32 gig in the bios/cmos settings.
I read that updating the bios can be damaging. Should I attempt to?
The link I was given for Bios updates is, after all, for the motherboard I have.
Thanks for your help guys.

Before you attempt a bios update - check the jumper settings on the drive please! The link above quite clearly shows the 32gig restriction jumper setting.
