RAM checks good, but I did try it some other ram also with the same results. I have not tried another vid card yet. WIll try that tonight. Also, will try zero-filling the partition and reinstalling the recovery CDs.

Zero Filling wont help if its a drive problem, there is a program ZAP this wipes the MBR , and program wipe... which wipes the drive clean, then you can start fresh.

    Good luck

I can't wipe the drive completely clean. It has the restore partition on it (it still works). I also have the restore CD set that HP sent me (that does NOT work).

I just tried to install a retail XP home, and it worked just fine. No problems whatsoever, not even with the AMDAGP.sys driver that it was locking up on using the restore partition.

Why is it trying to load AMD graphics drivers when this system has Intel onboard video?

Still looking for an answer. HP doesn't know...

Wrong image on the restore partition? Wrong restore cd sent?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

According to my parts supplier, the XT973 has either the Tortuga or Fresno motherboard: the Tortuga is brown and has two USB ports, the Fresno board is green and one USB port. Are you sure you have the correct Tattoo?
