    Question Ethernet Controller

What does the ethernet controller do and how do I find a driver for it. I have windows xp. I have been trying to find the driver on my resource cd, but there is nothing on there for ethernet controller. I have a Dell 4550 and was told if I install the Intel chipset drivers, that the driver I need would be in with the rest of those drivers, but it is not.

    Hi Welcome to windrivers

The ethernet controller is essentially your network card.... the drivers should be on the disk but could be under 3 Com 10/100 LAN for example.

Look for items which say Network Card or NIC or LAN, post here if you find something you are still unsure of.

nascarnut all the drivers for your dell are here

    You have a choice of:
    Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet
Dell TrueMobile 1180 Wireless USB Adapter
    Intel 10/100 LOM

Check your documentation to find out which one you have alternatively go here and enter your service tag it should give you just the drivers the machine needs.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

To be honest, I've always found onboard controllers to be at best OK for average usage. When it comes to demanding applications, like gaming and servers, I tend to recommend a good brand seperate card.

However, there's other things that can be done in an effort to eliminate/reduce the problem, such as using an STP cable.

Care to share the make/model of your computer or ethernet card? My psychic abilities are on the blink this week.

No, pentium 4 is not the computer, it is the processor. Do you have dell, hp, etc? If so, look on back for tag w/ model #.

Network card = ethernet card. Trendnet is a start, but they list 317 wireless products. Need model #.

Try everest: http://www.lavalys.com/products/down...ng=en&pageid=3 Post pci devices report.

So which network connection are you using, the wireless or the wired? If its the wireless, you will need to pull the card and find model # on it - its not stated above. The driver for the wired adapter is here: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...7&DwnldID=4275

    Same problem again...

I am using a Pentium 4 , Dell computer with winxp sp2 installed.

Some of the drivers seem to be missing from the installation disks.

I used Everest to find the name of my Ethernet card which is a

Broadcom NetXtreme 4401 fast ethernet controller.

I downloaded the drivers for this from Broadcom but i have 2 problems...

    1) should i use the 32 bit or the x86 version of the drivers; how do i find out which?

    2) the file is a zip file... not an executable
and i think i need to install the drivers manually because... for some reason... the have disk and look in specific locations are not working on my machine for the install drivers function.

How do I manually install the files and set them to run when windows starts?

    Any help much appreciated...
    thankyou

x86 is the processor type, 32/64 bit is it's operation, they are two seperate things.

If you've downloaded the drivers and have them extracted to a folder, it's fairly straight forward. Go to the device manager (control panel, system, hardware tab), find the device you want to install drivers for (it should have a yellow !, ? or a red X) click on the button "Install drivers" and point it to the folder in question.

    welcome to Windrivers Juliopop

    You want the 32bit version.

Unzip the files to a location you can find easily - eg. c:\broadcom
Now right click my computer, select properties, select the hardware tab at the top and click the device manager button.

You will have an unknown device or a device with a ? or a ! next to it. Double click it to open the properties window. Click on the driver tab and update driver button. Follow the wizard but tell it to include the c:\broadcom in it's search. Assuming you have the right drivers, it will install on it's own from there.
