Motherboard HD Light was Green, Now RED

    Hi Gang,

I've had the same case for several years now. Originally I had another mobo in it. The hard drive light was green. When I put a new mobo in it, the light didn't light up. Recently I switched directions on the HD lead and now it lights up, but its RED.

IS this something I should be concerned about? Does RED mean bad, or is this just something that is controlled by the motherboard itself?

    Thanks,
    Orangman

Not necessarily, some LED's can exhibit two or even three colors depending on the voltage. What's strange is that it lights up at all as they generally are unidirectional.

Can you explain a bit more exactly what you did Orangeman do you mean an 80 wire IDE cable by any chance[which are normally colour coded and supposed to only go on one way round]?
BTW just a thought on the indicator light but it could now be working at ATA100/133 wereas before it was ATA66 [cable incorrect way round].

or is this an AOL thing

    Sorry Arch,

    AOL Ain't to Blame,,,this time...

What I meant was that while I was installing a RAID card (that didn't work because it didn't support ATAPI devices), and while I was already inside my case I thought about my HD light that didn't work. I experimented by reversing directions of the lead on the power strip - the same one with the Power led, Reset Switch led, HD led & Power led.

When I did this, my HD light came on.

Ah gotcha I thought you meant the led on the bottom of the harddrive.
These leds on the front of the case only light up when current it put across them one way so you accidently had it the wrong way round to start off with

Some LEDs can be two color, like the ones used on mobo diagnosic things, that turn from red to green in binary pattern. if you power them + - then they are one color, while - + is another. I dunno much about how they work, so I can't say if the green side could go dead while the red would still work.

Could be that it just wasn't seated on the right pins before, or that the green side might actually be able to burn out.

Well, I don't know if the green one was burned out. With my other motherboard the green was working fine until I changed mobos.

As to it not being on the pins I don't think so. I looked at it before hand it and it was the last two pins on the strip and it was nestled flush with the next led.
