    No Sound After Reformat

    Hello wizards.

I recently reformatted my HP-Pavillion 7845 computer with a new Windows ME operating system. Like many others in this forum, my sound will not work. No microphone icon appears in the taskbar, everything is grayed out in the audio tab under multimedia settings in the control panel, etc. etc. I believe I have an onboard sound card because before the reformatting, I controlled the volume by a button on my keyboard and I know for a fact I have never physically installed any sound card.

Under the control panel\system\device manager every little box has a + sign to the left of it EXCEPT 'Sound, video, and game controllers.' My Crystal WDM Audio Codec tells me that the device is working properly, and my computer has 4 driver files:

    C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\cwawdm.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD (ntkern.vxd)
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MMDEVLDR.VXD
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\CWAWDM.SYS

The provider, file version, and copyright info is available for each file except the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD (ntkern.vxd), which simply says 'unavailable.'

    I checked programs/accessories/system tools/system information/components/multimedia/sound device, and I get:

    Name Crystal WDM Audio Codec
    Manufacturer Crystal Semiconductor Corporation
    Status OK
    IRQ Channel IRQ 9
    I/O Port 0x1200-0x12FF
    I/O Port 0x1300-0x133F
    Driver c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd (, 1,019.88 KB (1,044,352 bytes), Not Available)
    Driver c:\windows\system\mmdevldr.vxd (4.90.3000, 17.62 KB (18,043 bytes), Not Available)

I hope this is enough information to warrant any help you may be able to provide. Thanks in advance.

    Jason

    Welcome to Windrivers weezerd0g

Did you reformat using the HP recovery disks?

Turn off system restore and remove the sound and associated devices from device manager. Reboot to safe mode and make sure they have all gone - you may find some ghosts - if you do, delete them all.

Reboot to normal mode and redetect. If that does not work then
try loading the 98se driver It is compatible but ME will probably moan anyway.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

I did indeed reformat using the HP recovery disk. As far as turning off the system reboot and removing the sound and associated devices from the device manager, I'm a little unclear as to what you mean by that. Also, forgive my ignorance, but I actually don't even know how to boot to safe mode, so I may need some assistance in that regard as well. Thanks for the prompt reply, NooNoo.

OK, windows ME has a system restore feature. When it gets corrupted then it helpfully reinstalls the corruption. You need to turn that off. this document has the instructions for Windows ME

To boot to safe mode, press f8 a few times after the machine has started, but before windows has loaded. This will load a special diagnostic mode.

Now go start, settings, control panel and double click the system applet. In the device manager tab you will see a list of your hardware. Double click the + next to sounds and multimedia and it should list your sounds hardware. Click on each device and then click remove.

Now exit from control panel and start, shutdown, restart.

Windows should now go to normal mode and redectect and reinstall the sound drivers.

    NooNoo:

I did exactly as you said, and your instructions were clear and accurate. The problem seems to be solved! Worked like a charm, as a matter of fact. I still have one question, though: Should I re-enable the system restore feature or just leave it as is?

Thank you very much for your help, mi amigo.

re enable the system restore, but be aware it can get upset so don't rely on it.

If you've got a yellow ! or ?, select the properties for the device - it will have an error message.

The drivers for your system are here: http://www.ecsusa.com/downloads/drivers_p4v.html
You want the VIA Codec Sound Driver v1.60a. If you haven't already, install the VIA 4in1 driver v4.39v first

ALL it says is the drivers for this device are not installed(cod 28) then it tells me to reinstall, but when i do that it says cannot find hardware. I already dowloaded my driver from that site cause soembody already found it in a different forum, and when i installed it, the yellow! or ? didnt come off and sound still didnt work so im not sure if none of that will work, and the whole multimedia thing is like unknown, anything more ideas?ANd for some reason it wont let me install it because it says it cant find, SETUP.DLL

    Try this:
    1. Uninstall any audio drivers/software listed in add/remove programs.
    2. From a command prompt type "set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1"
    3. Start device manager and select View/Show hidden devices
    4. Delete the multimedia device w/ the code 28, as well as any other devices appearing as sound cards or AC'97 devices.
    5. Reboot and let windows redetect the device.
    6. Install the driver (if windows does not install).

If I'm not mistaken the system was "NOT" sensing the card?
Try the "ADD NEW HARDWARE" feature in the control panel TO REINSTALL THE SOUND CARD.
Also try reinstalling the chipset driver:
