    CONTRIBUTE: SP2 Problems and fixes

We need a SP2 Sticky, where we can post updates for the all the apps that need sp2 compatibility fixes, and we can post our sp2 problems.

Item 1 : StyleXP 2.12, already made a new thread yesterday here:
    http://forums.windrivers.com/showthread.php?t=62348

    Item 2 : NAV here:
    http://forums.windrivers.com/showthread.php?t=62355

Item 3 : MS IntelliMouse 5.2 Pro here:
    http://forums.windrivers.com/showthr...561#post506561

    Item 4 : Firewire 800 to 100
    http://forums.windrivers.com/showthread.php?t=62362

Could fix the Firewire problem a bit at least?
    http://www4.tomshardware.com/howto/20040823/index.html

UPDATE: MS Issues FIX here: http://forums.windrivers.com/showthread.php?t=67494

    Item 5 : TCP/IP connections
Many, many users are reporting problems with SP2 limiting outbound TCP/IP connections. This appears to be nailing anyone who makes heavy network use of their machine, including especially users running P2P applications

EventID 4226 patcher - After almost everybody knows the [EventID 4226: TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts].
    Fix: http://www.lvllord.de/4226fix/4226fix.htm

Item 6 : Symantec Updates LiveUpdate to work with SP2
Version 2.5.55.0 update for 32-bit Windows LiveUpdate files. This full version of LiveUpdate includes Enterprise management features that are compatible with the Symantec Enterprise Security Architecture (SESA) v2.0x. Most users of Symantec enterprise products should download and use this version of LiveUpdate. Download: Enterprise Update

Version 2.5.55.0 update for 32-bit Windows LiveUpdate files. This lite version of LiveUpdate does not include support for the Symantec Enterprise Security Architecture (SESA) v2.0x. Most home users should download this version of LiveUpdate, however the full version may also be used. See the Readme file for more information. Download: Lite Update

Item 7 : The problem with Windows XP SP2 & DIVX
    - The DivX problem is going to be repeated on quite a few applications. Anything that generates machine code into a memory buffer and then calls it will be hit, until the authors modify their software to tell Windows what they're doing. The calls for this have existed since the introduction of the Win32 API - it's just that until now, nothing went wrong if you didn't use them.

Item 10 : Flaws in Windows XP SP2 security features

Item 11 : Windows XP SP2 May Display the Wrong Icon in Zip Archives
    http://forums.windrivers.com/showthr...440#post510440

Item 12 : Windows XP SP2 and Prescott CPU Compatibility Issues?
Warp2Search is reporting that there are possible issues with Windows XP builds after installing SP2. While using Prescott core CPUs, as soon as they install SP2 and reboot, the system hangs at the Windows splash screen. Changing the CPU to a non-Prescott version corrects the problem.

it is also slower when i open any programs !
i was told that after installing SP2 to do a defrag because SP2 spreads wide across harddrive !
so ive done a defrag and it has not regained its speed
please if anyone has any ideas

    Hi all,

I keep getting the "locator.exe error" everytime different application window changes/refreshes (i.e. when you change to a new page in ie/when you go to a different folder in explorer, the pesky locator.exe error keeps on popping up), this happened right after I updated to sp2, the only solution i found was to uninstall sp2, and it back to ok.
    what the heck?

    Does uninstalling sp2 help?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

Don't know if this is a problem or not but right after I put in SP2 if I tried to change monitor resolution via the nVidia icon in the system tray the screen would go black just to bring up the menu, then again (which was normal) when I switched resolutions... At the time I was running 56.* and then upgraded to the latest nVidia drivers which didn't solve the problem... Any ideas?

I have experienced 1 lockup during boot after SP2, but on a single system - the GUI didn't start, and it had rebooted few times since SP2 installation. After reset it woked fine. Indeed, seems a little slower after SP2, even after defragging.

Preliminary testing has revealed some problems with Windows XP Service Pack 2 Published: 8/13/04

Some things I picked up from an MSDN blog include:

SP2 RC2 doesn’t appear to render XBMP images such as hit counters. The information should still be collected and available; it just doesn’t display on the page.
One individual complained about the pop-up ad blocker. The person had finished a lengthy online test only to be prompted to allow a pop-up. Doing so caused the entire page to reload and reset. The person lost all the work he’d done on that page. This was on a Microsoft site. Apparently this is done on purpose because capturing and replaying pop-ups instead doesn’t work unless the pop-up scripts are well written, which is another new SP2 problem that is actually the result of poorly-written legacy code.
Darren Stewart, who is apparently a network administrator in the UK, wrote a lengthy, highly negative, and very thoughtful analysis of just what is wrong with the way Microsoft manages IE. He isn’t a flamer or Microsoft basher by any means, and what he has to say is worth reading.
On the TechWatch forums, there is a description of a clean XP SP2 RC2 install that resulted in the loss of the “Startbar.”

I’ve seen various reports from around the world about strange happenings with eBay after installing XP SP2 RC2, but I couldn't duplicate any problems, and I both bid and own an eBay store, so I use all the features.

Other complaints have surfaced on the Web about an inability to have multiple applications access Borland’s Database Engine after installing XP SP2.

If you're a user of Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA), you'll need to download version 1.2.1 in order to get full XP SP2 compatibility.

I noticed my XP Pro computer at work, after I installed the IE 6 update that it now has to be rebooted because it runs soo slow. After reboot, all is well.

So far a couple of minor glitches..Ulead photoimpact has a couple of devices that don't work, and they are supposedly working on that problem..appears to be related to an unsafe method of handling memory allocation by the program..Photoshop elements had to be reinstalled..doesn't see NOD32 as an antivirus..but myself and three others noticed faster internet response after installation.

Yep the memory problem is a new protection thing in SP2 some older programs allocated a block of memory for there use and I read somewhere that SP2 doesnt allow that now unless you set it to ignore the program under the new tab you have on system properties\advaced\performace\settings\data execution protection as this is a method used to overload a system memory and crash it.

even divx coding has a problem i think, well if anyone has any fixes like some of the above ones that i posted plz mention them here, so everyone can get it. Basically alot of the current apps will need updates.

There seem to be a couple of hacks made to alter this already see the Inquirer for info and another here

One of the security features in SP2 is intended to help slow down the spread of Sasser type malicious programs, and SP2's stack apparently only allows 10 simultaneous connections per port, compared to the previously unlimited connections.
