    Angry No sound

This is the problem I ran system mech. to clean up some files and get rid of some extra junk files to clear up some space on my computer, my sound and everything else was working until i restarted it....since the sound wasn't working i figured that i'd just reboot the system to start fresh, but still no sound.

here's some basic info about the computer:

    here's the s/n: 201681341059

    module #: 0
    256MB
    DDR-SDRAM
    166.7MHz (PC2700)
    module manufacturer: Micron Tech.
    module Model: 8VDDT364AG-335GB
    Mother Board: GA-8VM533

Now i tried installing some audio drivers for the computer from this website

    http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboard..._GA-8VM533.htm

But no matter what i can't get no sound, it keeps saying that i have to enable the VIA AC97 Audio Chipset In BIOS first then run setup again, but as far as i can see it is enabled in BIOS, so if anyone could help please leave something

Have you checked at the back where the sound cord plugs in to see if its onboard and it isnt a card someone added ?

Do any audio devices show up in device manager?
If you boot to safe mode (checking that ac97 is enable in bios just once more) and remove any audio device or unknown device and reboot, does windows detect new hardware in normal mode?

I hate this automated system clean up proggies, people always seem to come a cropper with them at some point... does the one you use have a rollback or restore feature?

the thing is after the sound stopped working, i did a format restore, my comp didn't come with any driver cd's all the drivers are pre-installed, factory, and for some reason windows xp has it were you can't delete certain drivers...and audio drivers happen 2 be one of those drivers you can't just delete from the device manager

OK, if you disable the ac97 in bios, then boot to safe mode, it should let you remove the drivers without a problem... then you can reload them.

This may be indictative of a coincidental failure of the sound chip though...

I wouldn't want to open myself up to the obvious problems of delving in a strange machine that has problems remotely...

I think you can safely say that your ac97 has gone to the great board in the sky...

    Last ditch attempt...
Tried a manual detect? Any unknown devices? Reset cmos?

well i haven't installed any unknown devices...and the device manager says that the drivers are working properly, the location of the drivers aren't listed though, and the device usage drop menu is in grey so i can't even enable it
