Hi All
I recently bought Firewire 410 sound card and am having problems with CD playback. All playback from cd has crackes clicks and pops. Using Window Media player to play back CD. Using Windows media player to playback mpeg/mp3 sound quality is excellent but fro CD rom drive - very poor. I have got the latest driver for 410. Any ideas/tips for troubleshooting welcome.
Thanks

Welcome to WinDrivers Jules.
I take it that this problem has only occurred since using the 410 to output your sound?
Apart from ensuring the CD drive hasn't dropped back to PIO mode in Device Manager, have you installed the SP2 Firewire patch?
Also, with the on-board sound disabled, it could be a good idea to boot into Safe Mode and remove the Realtek drivers in case they're causing any problem.

There are also desirable optimisations for XP handling music, and otherwise enhancing performance. A useful one for devices using ASIO (Audio Stream I/O) drivers, which run as a service, is to raise the priority of services:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...s/ruffin1.mspx
This can help prevent busy applications like Media Player from starving your drivers of CPU cycles.
When the priority is set to favor background services, you might also like to turn off the background indexing service:
1. Click Start, Run, type services.msc then press enter or click OK.
2. Scroll to the "Indexing Service" in the right-hand pane and double-click it.
3. Change the Startup type to Disable and Apply.
4. Click the Stop button and wait for the service to stop then click OK.

No joy :(
Hi
I removed the Realtek drivers. (actually ended up disabling Realtek AC'97 in BIOS as well as removing). Have applied the SP2 firewire patch and still get exactly the same result ;(
Re checking if the CD has dropped back to PIO - how can I check? Under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers (Primary and Secondary??)
Aside from this any ideas welcome.
Many thanks
Jules

xp dma article here has many points you can check...
CD playback - is it set to digitally extract sound? If so, it's pulling it straight off the ide cable... if not, it's using the analogue cable (if it exists)... See what you have set.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

I had assumed it must be, the M-Audio 401 being an external module, and Jules' first post said AC97 "disabled". But only later turning it off in the BIOS indicates maybe not.
Jules, could you also please confirm your setup, that you've been outputting all the sound sources via the 410 module, with no connection remaining to the on-board sound?

Setup
Hi Platypus
Yes, I've been trying to output all sound via the Firewire 410. The Realtek ac97 is on onboard device, which I mentioned I had disabled originally. The reason I also disabled in the bios is because the PC is one these "media centre" PCs meaning that you can play music CD's though the CD rom without actually booting your operating system. (sound at this point is only output through realtek). Not really bothered about this this functionality....
But where I have a problem is when the PC is running and I am using the 410 as the sole audio output. As I say...off disk sound is excellent but as soon as I get the CD rom involved...horrible....
Hope this clarifies a little....Thanks, Jules
