I guess to scan fingerprints?

I could see this useful at airports, banks, businesses, etc., but the standard user would have no need for this.

User recognition and authentication.
We used a prototype at a hospital I workes at where the user's fingerprint authenticated network access. No username, no passwords to remember, much less likelyhood of unwanted intrusions.
