Scandisk Won't Scan After Bad Shutdown
Hi Gang,
Scandisk won't start after a bad shut down. I looked to see if the box "Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown" in checked in my MSCONFIG>Advanced menu and the option isn't there.
What can I do?

You actually want this to run? I would recommend running it manually after the bad shutdown if you really want to. Better yet, upgrade to Win2K or XP. You will probably have better luck with NTFS and a good defragging every now and then. 9x is neither stable, nor a viable long term use OS.

Will scandisk run in safe mode, or from the boot disk? I had to run scandisk that way for a long time.
"To seek out new life forms", and promptly whipe them out.

Yes, I can run scandisk in Safemode and from Bootdisk. The problem is I don't know what's causing this and I don't want to have to do it for a long time

there is a patch and a reg fix here While it is for the opposite problem, it may well sort yours out anyway.

Well I installed the patches and still no joy.
I did have a chance to read that article, located here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;152404
It said that:
Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition:
On the toolbar click Start, click Run, type Msconfig, and then click OK.
Click Advanced, and select the Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown option.
Click OK twice, and then click Yes to restart your computer.
NOTE: For Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition, this procedure adds AutoScan=0 to the [Options] section of the Msdos.sys file
So I checked the Disable After Bad Shuwdown and restarted, Then I did same thing again with it unchecked. No Joy.
I then checked the MSDos.sys file and found four of them. Two are in McAfee Backup and one is in C:\ ,and the other is in C:\Windows.
I changed them both to Autoscan=0 and Autoscan=1 and and still no joy. I wonder if I have too many msdos.sys files and which ones I should
eliminate?

One more thing. I reloaded Windows 98, no joy.
Second, Scandisking in Normal Mode doesn't work. it constantly restarts even after I disable Norton AV.
Scandisking in Safe Mode takes about 25minutes.
Scandisking in DOS takes about a minute.

Also, I reinstalled Norton System Works a few days ago. Around the same time this started happening. Norton works fine. Although I don't know how the two are related.

HI Gang,
I researched the dozens of queries I sent to Google and finally came up with one that worked.
I went into the C:\Windows\Command folder and deleted the Scandisk.alt file. When rebooted after a bad shutdown, Scandisk came on!!@!
