Unhappy Explorer XP uses 100% CPU system VERY slow

    Hi,

My computer is at a standstill. In task manager explorer.exe uses all available CPU (100%) mostly. I have installed all service packs, ran virus scan and Spybot. All is clean now. Control Panel will not open. Explorer does not open, even though it is using all CPU. I have 100s of photos that I will loose if I have to reinstall Windows.

If you boot into safe mode does Explorer.exe still take up 100% of your CPU? If not then you can transfer your pics to another HD if you have an extra one you can plug into it.

Did you do an online virus scan? Sounds like malware/spyware to me
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

I'm with NooNoo.. last time I saw this happen spyware was the culprit, but have you tried just ending the process and then restarting explorer.exe with "new task" in task manager? If you have an extra hard drive you can always do a windows install there, boot from that disk, and then not have troubles working over the files you want to keep.
