Internet Explorer & MSN Messenger no connection to Internet Problem

    Hi,

I have a machine running windows XP Pro. The machine is hooked up to the internet via a cable modem attached via an ethernet connection. The machine is leased a valid ip address and you can ping url's without any problems from the command prompt. Internet explorer and MSN Messenger however will not work. It's as if there is no internet connection present. I have tried using the windows xp winsock/registry tool and also a repair install on windows but neither have worked. I've now run out of ideas to be honest!!!
    Can anyone shed any light?

    Cheers

    Paul

    Are you running a firewall?

Some anti-virus programs come with a firewall an example would be pccillin.

    Can you browse by IP?

Have you power cycled the cable modem? (leave it off power about 1 minute then when it locks on restart the computer and see if any change.)

Check Internet options, Connections, Lan settings... make sure you don't have a proxy server specified or a dodgy IP address, or that you're telling it to dial-up instead of using network connection.

    Yeah and check for firewalls.

Check in Add Remove programs for a program called newdotnet. If it's there, uninstall it. run spybot, ad-aware to remove any nasties.

Yeah, I've already checked the browser settings for proxy servers etc, but this is OK. There is no firewall installed and the machine isn't using pccillin antivirus. It is using AVG which doesn;t have an associated Firewall.

    Hi,

All Spyware/Adware have already been removed. Newdotnet isn't installed either.

    Cheers

Eeeek no firewall??!?!?!? Run away, run away.... sounds like you might have some spyware in that case.... do the usual spybot/hijack this and see what comes up.. once you've done that go to www.zonelabs.com and download the free ZoneAlarms firewall...

    Hi,

All traces of spyware detected by Spybot & Adaware have been removed. A firewall won't necessarily prevent spyware anyway. If a user goes and installs Kazaa for example, a firewall will be of little help, however I agree that installing a firewall is always good practice.

Did you install SP2? If you did, got to add/remove programs and get rid of it.

    Hi Corturbra,

Tried the tool you suggested, but it appears that it is only relevant for win98/me operating systems.

    Any other ideas?

    Cheers
